Product Description

From Library Journal

Engelmann, a prominent West German journalist and author, has summoned his recollections and consulted his interviews over the years to compose this intriguing account. From his schooldays in 1933 through service as a private in the air force to imprisonment in 1944, Engelmann had no affection for the regime, and his role in assisting Jews and others to emigrate left him in difficulties late in the war. The story is hung in loose chronology on Engelmann's autobiography, but it is most engaging for the attitudes, heroism, and folly of the diverse characters (supporters and opponents of the regime are among Engelmann's relatives and friends) in his successive anecdotes. It is only regrettable that he has hurried with verve from one episode to the next. Still, this is a fascinating and moving book. Highly recommended for public libraries. James B. Street, Santa Cruz P.L., Cal.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating account!, Dec 17 2004
By Quill2002 - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: In Hitler's Germany (Paperback)
Having read a huge number of books on Nazi Germany and the Second World War, I often find that, despite my interest in the subject, the stories become repetitive. Not so with "In Hitler's Germany". Englemann's unusual viewpoint of a liberal young man during the Third Reich and his combination of his own life story and the stories of others he knew makes for a book that is very difficult to put down. The book is both humerous and extremely serious, but most of all, it is amazing. The quiet resistance of Englemann and some of his friends reads like a fictional account, but, of course, it's true. I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone with even a passing interest in World War II. My only problem with the book was that it was over too soon!

5.0 out of 5 stars In Hitler's Germany: Daily Life in the Third Reich, Jan 6 2003

This review is from: IN HITLER'S GERMANY (Hardcover)
I have read a fair amount on Germany in WWII, and I can, with pleasure, reccommend this book to you. It gives many views of life during that period and gives a quality, overall view of German during that time period. The writing is interesting and well put together. I am personally glad to have the opportunity to have read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars living with evil, April 13 2009
By Erich H. Loewy - Published on Amazon.com
This review is not of the Translation but of the original in German. It is also not really a history but rather a long anecdote which in speaking of the observation of one boy from Gymnasium to the end of the war. The story is fascinating and written so that it carefully describes the times and the reactions of people in them. I cannot say anything about the translation. The Nazis were not merely a group of paranoid and hysterical persons and the perpetrators would not have been able to get far if normal people simply said NO! There are sections which flash forward to after the war and shows some of these bystanders totally having suppressed evil and mainly interested in "getting ahead" come what may. There are fascinating stories of how a group of totally different people united to save the victims from evil. This group was composed of Communists, Socialists, very pious Christian, a fashionable tailor who made uniforms for the higher SS, etc. I think the book gives one of the best views into Nazi Germany and is obviously written with passion, intelligence and a wonderful sense of humour.
