Between his directorial duties on A Perfect World and The Bridges of Madison County, Clint Eastwood starred in this pulse-racing 1993 thriller. In the Line of Fire was directed by Wolfgang Petersen, the brilliant director of the World War II U-boat masterpiece Das Boot. Eastwood gives one of his best performances as Secret Service agent Frank Horrigan, who still feels responsible for the death of JFK 30 years earlier. Horrigan gets a shot at redemption when challenged by a psychotic but highly intelligent assassin (John Malkovich) who intends to kill the current U.S. president. Tension builds as this intellectual cat-and-mouse game reaches its climactic confrontation, but not before we've seen the killer at work, covering his trail with ruthless precision. Tightly scripted by Jeff Maguire, the film cuts Malkovich loose as one of the most memorable screen villains of the 1990s, and costars Rene Russo as Eastwood's sharp Secret Service colleague and romantic partner. The digital video disc offers standard and widescreen formats. --Jeff Shannon

Product Description

A gripping, gut-wrenching thriller that delivers suspense in almost unbearable doses, In the Line of Fire showcases Clint Eastwood at his finest. In a performance that won universal acclaim, Eastwood stars as Frank Horrigan, a veteran Secret Service agent haunted by his failure to protect John F. Kennedy from assassination. Thirty years later, he gets a chance to redeem himself when a brilliant psychopath threatens to kill the current president and take Horrigan with him. Taunting him by phone and tantalizing him with clues, the assassin (John Malkovich) lures Horrigan into an electrifying battle of wits and will that only one man can survive. Co-starring Rene Russo as Horrigan's risk-taking Field Chief, In the Line of Fire is a high-wire balancing act of searing suspense, explosive action and surprising romance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great movie in all ways..never lets up Mar 28 2013

If you watch the film you must watch the commentary for here we have a very learned director who has studied the history of american film, down to the last dot, do north american filmmakers understand the history of film, if you atch closely(and the deleted piano scenes tells us to include these would be too campy..a wise choice..those casablanca films)you can see the hostory of film recapitulated throughout the film I'm not the only one who sees it. To touch on a point in the commentary about visual imagery, and dialogue, and scripting, and film technique that approach was read up on, a $600000 script was produced which is the basis of any good script the director finds..once you have a good script the other elements just add to the mix..complement and highlight it. He also then compares the work of Malkovitch the stage actor and he cast him in his film and he seems to be aware of his stage origins and adapting his skills to the film another form of art and the director senses the difficulty in comparison to the tv/movie star clint whom he considers pure. Actors and film people in hollywood will be surprised at this assessment and may not agree but I think this is the right word. He sais of clint he's someone who thinks, enjoys solitude, has trouble with his lines doesnt want to memorize it over and over, he's read about this clint has he's thinking, and he reminds the director of what he's read of the golden age actors like James Cagney and HUmphrey bogart who had the same kind of apprach to art..what they said they said and you werent sure if there was a retake..and they asked clint before the film if he wanted to direct or what? His latest movie has the line about Cagney the writers throw it in..in this sense he uses the proper word pure seeking something unadulterated as when he talks of the bed scene with rene russo(who works wonderfully with clint in this film and the two have chemistry which clint seldom has in his film)in which they have some problems and as director what he tries to set up. This idea of filming is opposed to others who know their lines..this was a problem for those who worked with the great improviser Jackie Gleason who worked on the warner lots in the 40's..and this is clint's approach to art as I understand it..and he said the last romantic lines in the film he ad libbed. They remained in the film yet his piano scenes were removed..and perhaps that was a wise choice it seems to be reflective in too redundant a fashion and repetitive to Casablanca which does not fit his image..wisely removed. Revisionism goingback to Kennedy's assassination a man there to protect him, looking back as a secret service agent, and learning from his past and protecting a current president. You can watch this film I just thought i'd reflect on the philosophical comments to the film..as a process of art and artistry..and loneliness. This is also a clint theme in many of the films. Loneliness as opposed to solitude..solitude is an enjoyed state and as with the company of the girl its not forced if he seems to enjoy it and it goes some where and that goes with any mediation(this too is philosophy) an dits an approach that helps the director highlight his film and star..as opposed to the others and many others in too many films ken always looking for barbie this too is also clint looking for the purity in experience..thinking..and when you process all that we have amovie..going to the world of philosophy to understand a medium almost like he read the works of PASCAL..thoughts..what better book than to understand this art of this screen icon who used to work with the older people in hollywood and one of the characters in this film is called harry a prefigurement of many ideas which later went into creating his pure person..looking to separate himself from others and finding authenticity..and the world of philosophy is a good way to understand his art and get a hold of it and I appreciate the directors effort to learn american film which enthralls him as does its only modern legend clint, not to make a clint and barbie movie which caused some problems on the film..and the piano scenes were deleted..and he understands a pure film..in all aspects of his life he's a legend and recaptures movie magic..like E.T...is there a better film in hollywood and anyone who understands film more who in LIncoln has also understood revisionism and asophisticated film..but here we have a look at a legend and some comments on art and work with alegend based on an enightening commentary..E.T...movie magic from opening your eyes and how the film process entertains you in all ways..

I enjoyed to see this movie than i qualify to one of the best police/action movie ever. the relationnship between Mr.Origan and his partener, and so whit the killer is very psychological and interesting.

Excuse my bad english.

Un des meilleur film d'action/policier que je connais. La relation entre le policier Origan est tres amusante alors que sa relation avec le tueur est tres psychologique!

Un des meilleurs du genre!!!
