Product Description

Product Description

The War of 1812 between the United States and Britain has been covered in detail by many historians, but its impact on the lives of women has been largely overlooked. After years of research, Dianne Graves has produced a marvelous study of how the war affected women at all levels of society, from high society in Washington and Quebec to the women who followed their husbands to the front lines. She brings to life the untold stories of wives, daughters, heroines and harridans, as revealed in memoirs, diaries and letters of the time. The book is well illustrated with portraits, cartoons of social comment and styles of dress of the time.

About the Author

Dianne Graves is the author of two previous books. "A Crown of Life: The World of John McCrae" examined the life and times of the doctor-soldier-poet who wrote the poem "In Flanders Fields." She has also written a children's book about the Battle of the Windmill in 1838.

A little disappointing April 18 2008
By Ann Wass - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have been waiting for a book covering this topic for years. So I was a little disappointed that there wasn't more new information in it. I realize that this information is very hard to come by, but it seems the author didn't go as far as she could have to try to find it. There were primary sources that she didn't pursue. I was also disappointed that she used secondary sources so much, such as Anthony Pitch's book, rather than tracking down those primary sources herself. But it is noteworthy that she made the effort to cover the war from a different point of view than the traditional military historian.
