Product Description

From Library Journal

The moments, hours, and days mothers spend with their children are marked with an intimacy and erudition that is, however transitory at the time, the very thread of the lifelong mother/child relationship. In this engaging photographic anthology, 23 accomplished women photographers (including Sally Mann, Donna Ferrato, and Sheila Metzner) share images of their children and their thoughts on photographing so close to home. For some of these women, the advent of motherhood turned them to the art of photography, while for others photographing their children was naturally incorporated into already established artistic efforts. Several of the images are published here for the first time and were made for family albums. Ranging from studied portraiture to composed collaborations to fleeting observations from everyday life, the images all express the timeless regard that these mothers have for their sons and daughters. The book is also an impressive survey of contemporary women photographers. A moving introduction describes the breathless wonderment of motherhood and the importance of its expression through art. Recommended for large public and academic libraries. Debora Miller, Minneapolis

4.0 out of 5 stars Thoughts, April 18 2011
By Danielle Kutscheid "danii" - Published on Amazon.com
In Their Mother's Eyes is a visual presentation of twenty-three women photographers and their unique vision of their children. It represents how they integrate their lives as artists and mothers, through the use of their children as subjects. The introduction brings about a discussion of the different ways in which these women approach their children with the camera. Jill Hartley depicts a "play with clichés," Sarah Benham's photos show teenage portraits, and Verena von Gagern used moments of light in conjunction with her children's bodies. Each spread is concise and simply laid out with a different color for each artist. One simple quote per artist helps bring the photographers' viewpoint to her work. It is interesting to see these photographs lying next to each other to see the varying viewpoints of children, with Sally Mann's elegant postures and detail in nature and Maud Schuyler Clay's color moments in a more traditional American home settings.
The book's conclusion leaves is a group of short biographies of each photographer.
