5.0 out of 5 stars Intelligence and Humor, April 3 2000
By F. Becker - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Incredible Umbrella (Hardcover)
I remember loving this book when I read it as a teenager. An English professor finds an umbrella in a junk shop, and when he opens it he is transported into the worlds of fiction. Imagine encountering Frankenstein's monster, or trying to get out of Flatland. Or trying to figure your way out of a world of Gilbert and Sullivan. It's a real hoot and a fun read. Lots of references to literature, though, so if you aren't well read, you may not get all the allusions, but when you do, you feel SO intelligent!

The sequel, The Amorous Umbrella, is the same teacher using the umbrella to find the perfect woman. He searches through Fairytales, Shakespeare and even Soap Operas. Good combination of intelligence and humor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little book, Jun 7 2010
By Francine M. Apollo "Book Diva" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Incredible Umbrella (Hardcover)
I picked this off the shelf at work (Library at SUNY Cobleskill) and it looked interesting...little did I know!
What a great little book!!! This may appeal to adult readers who enjoy Harry Potter and the like. The main character goes through time and space with his very special umbrella. He encounters Gilbert & Sullivan worlds, an alternative universe with a variation on Sherlock Holmes!
This book was just too much fun; the author had fun with literature and the musical world. That it ends with the main character meeting the Fairy Queen was icing on the cake for me.
Look for this book in library collections, it was published in 1979, or used book outlets.
