Great for encouraging reading strategies in your classroom. Can be modified for higher grades. Makes readers really question and process what they are reading.

This book contains everything I need to make sure my students are getting the most from their independent reading. It breaks down 8-box activities by reading strategies (and in other ways) and gives students a variety of ways to communicate their understanding of the books they read with little prep for me. It also contains the rubrics required for assessment of these 8-box activities, and the visual style is nicely differentiated for a variety of junior to intermediate levels. I think I would have to adjust the language slightly for my primary grades, but with everything already laid out, there's no need to 'reinvent the wheel' and I'm left only to simplify rather than create.

I appreciate the help to make the 'Quiet Reading' more interactive. 'Independent Reading' now has a real place in my classroom much to my students' benefit. Love this book!

(I'll be using it in Shanghai next fall in my ESL classes.. Looking forward to seeing the activities at work in another country.)

Independent Reading Inside the Box Feb. 14 2009
By Jan of MI - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This is a great book! It is full of ideas that I can use with my guided reading groups and my book clubs (literature circles) groups. The one problem I have is the size of each block. My third grade students were not able to fit their writing and drawings into the space. However, I increased the size of each box and it was much better. I was able to put two activities on an 8 1/2 X 11 page and that worked.

Tools for Independent Reading Accountability Aug. 10 2010

Have you desired some authentic, purposeful, instructional tool to hold students accountable during Independent Reading? This is the book for you!
Based on four critical teaching elements; Word Skills, Taxonomy of Thinking, Text Elements, and Reading Comprehension Strategies, the author Lisa Donahue designed meaningful graphic organization tools. The "8 boxes" incorporate all reading strategies with the ability to diferentiate to student needs requiring accountability through written responses. The book offers various templates to use with detailed explanations and grading rubrics for student expectations. I recommend this book as a tool that targets students individual needs at all levels in learning.

Independent Reading Aug. 25 2009
By J. Johnson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Excellent book. I have shared it with other reading teachers and they ordered it too. Great resource for independent reading. The only problem I have with it is the work pages are too small and have to be enlarged.

Quick and Accurate Monitoring Aug. 29 2009
By Patricia Franklin - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Independent Reading Inside the Box is a well thought-out and developed book of tools for developing independent reading skills in students. It is appropriate for regular education and special education students. It covers all levels of Bloom's Taxonomy of Thinking. The activities given are short and skill specific; making monitoring and assessing a student's understanding of reading skills and strategies quick and easy. Although reproducible pages are given (four boxes per page), most can be done on the student's own paper. Good to consider if your school is conserving paper as part of their budget cuts.
