5.0 out of 5 stars What a find! Oct 21 2012

I love BBC movies, dramatic series and documentaries. But there are some that are outstanding even compared to the rest of BBC programming.

"The Indian Doctor" is one of those. The casting is superb and the script is very engaging. Some of it is lighthearted and humorous but there is pathos and dramatic moments as well.

The setting in Wales of the 1960s works well.

But what really makes this show is the performances of Ayesha Darker and Sanjeev Bhaskar. Mr. Bhaskar plays the lovable and warm hearted doctor while Ms. Darker beautifully fills the role of wife 'who wants to move to London'. As her character builds on itself we see past the wealthy well-bred upper class Indian woman who does not feel at home in a small isolated Welsh village, to a intelligent and capable woman with a big heart.

But there is no season 2 to be had on Amazon.ca so when you have tasted the delights of season 1 you are on your own!

5.0 out of 5 stars A rich surprise! Dec 23 2012

No doubt but that this was much more than a new culture introduced to a beautiful but troubled environment. The lead actors, the Doctor and wife, brought wonderful and human reality with a new perspective to a community hard imprinted with its core challenges. Yes, certainly a shame that they didn't have another year to complete a full settlement. A great little Welsh cad character was also worthy for the circumstance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully shot Mar 8 2013

Not high drama, just another of those beautiful little British village stories. They usually revolve around a newcomer (police man in Heartbeat, priest in BallyKissAngel) and in this case it is an Indian doctor out to do good at the same time as putting in some distance between him and the death of his child.

His wife is all for coming to England, but she had grander surroundings in mind i.e. London. She gradually comes round after she becomes attached to a young boy whose mum is dead and whose father is a drunk being blackmailed by the mine manager.
