This review is from: Indian Slow Cooker: 50 Healthy, Easy, Authentic Recipes (Paperback)
I am an Indian who has recently moved to Canada. My husband and I both have extremely hectic schedules, and consequently very little time to spend in the kitchen. At the same time, we love to eat home-cooked, nutritious meals. We've tried various slow-cooker recipes in the past, but were looking for something that would help us achieve authentic Indian flavor. This book is just what we needed. The instructions are precise and detailed enough for a detailed-obsessed person like me. There are many little tidbits about varying things as per individual tastes, giving flexibility - again a big plus. The author has also taken care to include information about omitting ingredients for the health-conscious people who are averse to using too much butter or oil. I have tried several recipes given in this book, and I'm yet to be disappointed. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves Indian food but is short on time or simply prefers using a slow cooker.

Good but pricey,
This review is from: Indian Slow Cooker: 50 Healthy, Easy, Authentic Recipes (Paperback)
Take note: this book is MUCH smaller and thinner than it looks, and only the last half of the book actually contains recipes. Considering how much it cost, I was a little bit put out. That said, we've now made 3 recipes from the book, including the Spicy Squash and the Punjabi Eggplant, and they were spectacular. The book is also great as an alternative to all the slow cooker cookbooks out there that centre around putting a bit block of meat in the pot and adding a sauce. There's a huge depth of flavour in her recipes, and TONS of vegetarian choices.

Simply had to chime in with a 5 star review in the hope of offsetting the low review given by somebody who didn't even seem to try the recipes. This book has rapidly become a stand-by in my kitchen: we haven't been without at least a liter of one Singla's superb Punjabi style beans in the fridge since it arrived. For the adventurous it even includes instructions on making your own paneer, which is the cottage-style cheese often included in vegetable stews to delicious effect. While some of the spices may be a little intimidating for some readers, most are readily available in a good bulk or grocery store and they serve to transform simple and cheap ingredients like beans, lentils, and chickpeas into healthful and tasty meals. I've also had fine luck substituting store brand curry powder for the bouquet of other spices like tumeric, cumin seed, and garam massalla called for in a recipe - you miss the nuances of flavor but it works fine in a pinch. It's true that there aren't a lot of pictures in the book, and avid carnivores beware as there aren't very many meat dishes here (though the ones I've tried so far have been amazing), but not one of the recipes I've tried has let me down yet.
