5.0 out of 5 stars 30+ years and counting!, April 10 2008
By M. G. Kimmel - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Indiscreet (Rm) (Audio CD)
Growing up, my brother and I didn't get along real well. Still, I owe him a great debt for the one time he told me about this weird band he saw on one of the concert shows on TV in the early 70s. He said he thought they sounded OK, but I might like them - they were called Sparks or something like that.

The next weekend, I think they were on The Midnight Special. Got lucky there! This Hitler-looking guy playing keyboards, a drummer going ballistic, talented guitarist and a bassist, and this guy with longer, curly, dark hair in front of it all singing in a really high voice.

The Hitler-looking guy was Ron Mael, and the high-voice singer was his brother, Russell. I believe the appearance was to promote their 'Kimono My House' album, which was just before 'Indiscreet.'

I bought 'Kimono' and found that 'Indiscreet' was out as well, so I bought that. 30 years and counting, I still love most anything Sparks does. Indiscreet finds them at their sarcastic best and still rocking pretty well.

With 'Indiscreet,' as with any Sparks release, you can't JUST listen to the music. you can't JUST listen to the words. You have to take everything in at the same time or you're going to miss something really fun!

Fun is only one of the words to describe 'Indiscreet' - or Sparks in general. Some other words would be;

Funny, interesting, sarcastic, perceptive, intelligent, talented, subtle (sometimes subtle - other times about as subtle as kick in the head), and...

If you listen to 'Indiscreet' I'm sure you'll be able to add to my list of descriptors. If you buy 'Indiscreet,' you'll be glad you did!

5.0 out of 5 stars Some Of THe Best Rock n' Roll Ever Created, Sep 12 2010
By Stinky K. - Published on Amazon.com

The Mael brothers created some of the most innovative and inventive music in their time. Unfortunately, because of a lack of intelligence on the part of the public, they dumbed down or tried to placate the public more and more with every subsequent album until they actually did obtain a good level of popularity but at the expense of making some really horrible music. The first two albums they made with Todd Rundgren as producer were just amazing but unfortunately way ahead of the times and public. They are simply brilliant albums. Later albums such as Indiscreet and Kimono My House are very good, great by Rock standards, but tried to cater to a bit more with a harder Rock edge. I highly recommend the first two albums Sparks and A Woofer in Tweeter's Clothing, and then Propaganda, Indiscreet, and Kimono My House in no particular order. Big Beat is recommended only if you are thrilled with the others but lacking a bit in my opinion as it got even a bit more Rock edged. Anything after that was made for the KROQ crowd with synths and it was pure attempt to reach the lowest common denominator, and it did work. The music they made once they went synth-pop has no resemblance to the first albums I have recommended. If you have only heard the KROQ hits and Euro-pop recordings, do not judge them by this because they really are nothing alike. Their early music was really brilliant and is one of the sad spots in Rock n' Roll history because their brilliance and effort went almost unnoticed, it certainly did not give them the credit and popularity they deserved, and they were forced to change the formula of what could have been much more great and interesting music. Indiscreet is a very good album. All my best and appreciation to the Mael brothers who really created some brilliant art.

This is a good effort by both Ron and Russell Mael, but not as musically focused as the previous "Kimona My House" and "Propaganda" releasess. The songs are diverse and cover a wide range of musical generes including: pop, rock, swing, jazz and classical. If you enjoy the "Rock" side of Sparks, my suggestion is to start with "Kimona My House" and "Propaganda". These releases feature: Dinky Diamond (Drums), Adrian Fisher/Trevor White (Guitar), Martin Gordon/Ian Hampton (Bass). Many critics/fans alike including myself believe that this was a very good recording/touring period for the band.
