3.0 out of 5 stars To hell and back, Jun 16 2009

This review is from: Inferno (Paperback)
A nice little story about a has-been science fiction writer trying to escape Dante's version of hell. I really enjoyed being a witness to all the creative little ways you can punish a person!

Hmm'doesn't say much about me, does it?

I'm looking forward to the follow up book, Escape From Hell.

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended. Reprinted for a new generation, and now even more relevant, Inferno must not be missed., Jun 12 2010
This review is from: Inferno (Paperback)
Highly recommended. A classic now reprinted for a new generation, and even more relevant now than when it was written, Inferno must not be missed.

Take a trip through the unendurable agony of the damned, at once both a travelogue and an exploration of man's inner workings and the science of hell. Is it magic, or a construct created by a being of infinite resources, and what's the difference? What is the meaning of damning someone for a crime that is no longer considered a sin? Take a trip with Allen Carpentier, has-been sci-fi writer, and his mysterious, long-suffering guide Benito as they tour the depths, seeking escape... From the deepest and final ring of Hell.

5.0 out of 5 stars Madcap journey through Hell, Jun 3 2007

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Inferno (Mass Market Paperback)
Niven and Pournell have taken Dante's Inferno and given it a sci-fi twist. The basics of Inferno are there, the vestibule of Hell, the concentric circles of Hell, the woods of the suicides and so on. Each area is designed for a different 'sin'. Instead of Virgil journeying through Hell we have a dead science fiction writer, who doesn't believe in an afterlife, being guided by a well known historical figure...I won't give the name away and spoil the surprise.

The writers have produced a funny, fast paced romp of a book, albeit somewhat brief, that will have you laughing aloud at times, cringing at others, but also figuring out how many areas of Hell you could end up in. There is nothing high brow about this book and it makes no pretence at being a literary work of art. It is produced purely as a quick, fun read and this is a job it does admirably. It is an old book, long out of print but scheduled for a re-print. If you can grab a copy, you won't be disappointed.
