While my entire sailboat experience is tied to watching the America's Cup races for the last 30 years, I do enjoy the subject and have learned at least a good bit of theory about it during that time.
This game visually looks great. I was impressed that the devs did actually know something about their subject. That's not always the case in these sims. That was the good part. After the tutorial I had a lot of interest in getting to the meat of the app. Once I did, drawbacks started to pop up.
The first thing that disappoints me about this app is that it does not exit cleanly. It stays in memory, which is a No-No for me personally.
Subsequent levels are unlocked by completing races quickly enough. I made it to the third race before deciding this app just wasn't for me, per the following notes. I didn't see any particular indication of what time is required to advance, as far as I can see you just have to keep trying and improving your time, then check to see if the next "race" is unlocked.
There is also an interface mistake here. Once you "finish a race" nothing happens to cue you concerning what happens next. You have to hit the "Pause" icon, then back out to the race menu. Very counter-intuitive.
The bad part is that the game plays more like a race car track than a sailboat course. The pace is just too frenetic to give the real feeling of a sailboat race. Possibly they thought it had to be that fast paced for the "gaming app public", so instead of providing the feel of sailing, this app simply has the feel of any of dozens of turn the wheel to steer the car apps. At the pace this game requires you to race the boat, and the very brief "race legs", using strategy to find the best wind is irrelevant.
So while this is different in a way, I think the devs missed a big opportunity by jazzing the race on the assumption that app users have no patience.
It's worth a try as the FAotD, but I think anyone looking for a real sailing sim will tire of it very quickly. I did.
I played this on a Kindle Fire 8.9 HD, and had no technical problems with the game.

Edited - issue finally resolved after 2 weeks... like my original review below says, game is great, but just wish the response time for the bug fix would have been a bit faster.
Normally I'm too lazy to write reviews. But this game, which would have been 5 stars, fails miserably at playability. None of the races after tutorial recognises that u have finished the race so u end up wandering aimlessly until u manually exist but the stars are not awarded, leaving u unable to progress in the game...

On my Galaxy S4, I finish the first course with 2 stars and it says "Race Finished" but it never stops and I just sail around the small area endlessly. Tried many times. Restarting or returning to the menu does not keep my score. Also, while I prefer vertical sail controls, I can only move the sail between left and center. I have to use horizontal controls if I want to move the sail to the right. Looks like it could be fun if it worked.
I have a kindle fire and I read the reviews and they weren't all that bad so I figured "why not try it?" so I did and at first it was fine and then when I went to race, it never " finished" the race and wouldn't track my progress so I don't recommend this app for kindle fire users.

It truly pains me to have to rate this one low but I have no choice because the developers have really screwed this one up in my view. What a wasted opportunity!
You see, the game is actually pretty good in terms of promise, but in actual execution? It falls way short of the mark.
This could have been an awesome boating simulation if only the developers had simply cared enough to make it one. Instead, it is clear to me that they took the easy way out and opted to just make this some sort of boat racing arcade game. Well, as such, it just isn't any fun. In that regard, I would much rather play a good auto racing game with decent controls than what amounts to a very difficult to control boat racing game.
What a tragedy. There's no reason for this.
The graphics are good, the programming skill seems to be there, yet the game design is horribly flawed. The developers need to revisit this and decide what this app actually should be.
I vote: simulation.
If they simply went that route instead and polished this up, it could easily be one of the best simulation apps ever offered on Android.
I hope you're listening, Devs. Don't waste this codebase on a lousy game. Use it to make an awesome sim! If you do, I have four more stars for you.
