cute story gorgeous blu-ray,

This review is from: Inkheart [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Though the film's concept is intriguing, about a reader who has an uncontrolled ability to bring characters in and out of books, the story is a bit too limited (and linear). It's simple and easy too follow - I just wish this fantasy had more magic - there's so much that could have been done. The film's special effects are minimal. Instead authentic backdrops, costumes etc. give Inkheart a realistic look. The actors are good (Brendan Fraser, Paul Bettany, Helen Mirren, Jim Broadbent & Andy Serkis), but for me, the star is the scenery. These locations are spectacular on blu-ray. Unfortunately, there's not many blu-ray extras - a few short featurettes and some deleted scenes. (If you read the back cover, don't be confused, the entire movie is in high def - the non-HD material refers to the special features only.) Though I like this movie - overall, it's interesting (and much better than Disney's Bedtime Stories, which wasted a similar concept) - I'm happier to have it on blu-ray because it's gorgeous. (3.5 - 4 stars)

Great movie,

An enjoyable and thrilling adaptation of Cornelia Funke's book Inkheart. Suitable for the entire family if the kids are old enough to handle some scary & violent scenes (official rating is PG). The fantasy element should appeal to fans of not only Funke's work, but also of Phillip Pullman's (His Dark Materials Box Set) and of course Tolkien's and J.K. Rowlings' as well. After all, who has not desired to see a great book come to life before their eyes? Who has not wished to be in the room to see twelve dwarves and a wizard eating & drinking their fill in a cozy hobbit hole? Who has not wished they could try out the Subtle Knife for themselves? And who has not wished to be able to inflate a nasty relative and watch them float away over the rooftops? Inkheart is the movie where fantasy meets reality head-on, and where being a really good reader just might get you more than you bargained for.

Inkheart,
This review is from: Inkheart (Coeur d'encre) (DVD)
As a stand-alone movie this would have been fine; and some of the actors give great performances as the characters they portray (Brendan Fraser as "Mo", Eliza Bennett as "Meggie", and Paul Bettany as "Dustfinger"), but by-in-large this movie is very disappointing for any true lover of the original Cornelia Funke trilogy.Other than a loosely-based translation of the main theme, the movie is almost completely unrecognizable as being the same one that was brought so wonderfully to life within the pages of the novels. While the character names are the same, and the Shadow is impressive, the movie strays so far from the books that it's hard to accept it as having any connection at all to the beloved story. All movies have a tendancy to wander away from the paths taken by the authors of the novels they are adapted from, as producers and directors take creative license in the hopes of giving the movie more "impact" or of drawing in more "revenue", but most are able to remain true enough to the stories they are derived from that both those who are fans of the books and those who haven't read a word are able to enjoy them. The Harry Potter movies are a prime example. This movie, however, takes so many liberties with the plot that it renders it practically unrecognizable. I couldn't put the novel down. I woke up wanting to sneak in a few pages; I stayed up late at night preferring to get lost within its pages to going to sleep. The movie, however, lost me almost from the beginning, and left me shaking my head wondering: "Why in the world would they do that?" I shut it off no less than twice and actually walked away from it completely for a couple of hours before ever going back to finish it. Had I not read the novel, I probably would have found the movie more to my liking; but, as a lover of the books, it wasn't worth the money I paid for it! What's more, I was extremely disappointed with the portrayal of some of the characters, such as Fenoglio. In the novel he is a quick-witted, dry humorist, whose dealings with his grandchildren brought smiles to my face. In the movie, he comes off as a doddering, old fool. If you've never read the book, then by all means, buy this movie. It would be enjoyable for those new to the story or those who simply aren't into reading. However, if you are a fan of the books, steer clear. You're better off letting your imagination take you to the events and places of Inkheart. The experience is in no way improved by watching this.
