About the Artist
Robert Rich began building synthesizers when he was 13 years old, and has continued to pioneer and customize synthesizer technology and software ever since. He studied computer music at Stanfords prestigious CCRMA while earning a degree in Psychology, and in 1982 first performed his now-legendary Sleep Concerts -- ultra long-form shows meant to sustain hypnogogic states in a sleeping audience. Since 1982, Rich has recorded over a dozen influential and critically priased albums, ranging from early forays into static deep ambience like 1983s Trances/Drones to the electro-acoustic environments of Rainforest (1989) and Propagation (1994). Richs collaborators have included Lustmord, Steve Roach, Alio Die, David Torn, Vidna Obmana, and Forrest Fang, among others. He also records with his group, Amoeba, exploring atmospheric songcraft on their 1987 CD Watchful. Along with his prolific recordings, Rich has written numerous articles on electronic music and microtonality for such publications as Electronic Musician, Keyboard, and Music Technology. He also writes music software, designs sounds for electronic instrument manufacturers, and is co-developer of synthesizer microtuning specifications that have been accepted as industry standards.
