Bought this Spray Commander from Innotek a few weeks ago but only got to start using it this past week. It works great! Effective. And it seems to annoy my dog rather than hurt him - like smelling a bad odour, like a stinky fart.
At first, I just had it on my dog's neck without using the spray, that's part of the reason it took me some time before I started using it. The instructions say to put it on and off without using it to get your dog used to it. I think the main reason is so your dog won't make the connection between the spray and the collar. Same reason you're not supposed to be fiddling with it in front of him or her. That way your dog associates the spray with the action/behaviour and not the collar. And that way, you can take the collar off and your dog's corrected behaviour sticks, as opposed to him realizing that when the collar's off, he can start misbehaving again.
My dog's a 14-month, 30kg (70lb) retriever shepherd. He is super ultra hyper. Really friendly, but over-active. I've tried just using positive reinforcement, but have come to the conclusion that to really get some behaviours to be consistent a little bit of negative reinforcement is also needed. Once I take him off the leash, he will run around, and not come back to me when I call for him. He doesn't run away and stays close, but I was having the hardest time, getting close enough to him to put the leash back on. He's playful, so he would sit and stay until I was just within arms' reach, then he would bolt away. As soon as I got this spray, when he did run away, I sprayed him and he made a face and stopped in his tracks. Then I would call him - and he came over! Immediately after he would go back to his old behaviour, but another spray and this time it seemed to stick for this session. Everytime I called for him, even with other dogs distracting him, he came over. Some other day afterwards, he seems to have remembered but was still testing the spray so I had to give him a reminder that it's still there. I'm confident I won't have to spray him again the next time, or maybe just 1 or 2 more times for it to stick. Then I'm hoping I won't have to have the collar on anymore for this purpose. I'm sure it'll work for other bad, hard-to-control behaviours, so I will of course keep it handy.
One improvement I would suggest to Innotek is to have the button depressed or tucked in more into the device so the buttons don't stick out. That or an on/off button on the remote. If you put it in your pocket, for example, or even just in your hand, it's not hard to accidentally spray your dog, which would ruin your dog's understanding of cause and effect. Like your dog's thinking, "I'm just sitting around and I get sprayed... what the....?"Read more ›
It was a great product while it lasted unfortunately I quickly found out when it stopped working that there is only a 30 day warranty on the product. The company said they never had any problems but when trouble shooting failed they offered to sell me a refurbished one for another $50 plus shipping. Hmmm! something weird if they have refurbished collars on hand to sell? No I would not recommend this product due to the short life and no warranty past 30days.
Works great so far. All I need to use once in a while is the tone to get my dog's attention. I have hardly used the spray at all. I find that when my dog is worked up he just needs the tone to change his direction in behavior. The only thing that I would change is the spray which I would have preferred the non scented spray to the citronella. Hope this helps anyone thinking of buying the collar.
