Product Description

Book Description

The final core operating system volume in the New Inside Macintosh series, this book describes parts of the Macintosh operating system that allow programmers to manage low-level aspects of the operating system. It covers topics that every Macintosh programmer must master.

From the Back Cover

The Macintosh system has matured over the past 12 years into the sophisticated and diverse Mac OS that developers work with today. Apple is meticulous in its documentation of the Mac OS, and the result is the Inside Macintosh series.

Apple and A-W make this documentation available to you in a variety of formats:

* Individual bound books (paper! how novel!)
* Electronic full text in DocViewer format: Inside Mac CD-ROM
* Electronic quick reference: Macintosh Programmer's Toolbox Assistant
The complete list of 27 titles is pretty daunting, but take heart. You can think of Inside Mac topics in two groups: those that are common to all Macs, and those that are specific to your application.

The core technology topics:

* The Macintosh Toolbox
* Interapplication Communication
* Text
* Imaging with QuickDraw
* Memory, Processes, Files, Operating System Utilities, Devices
Specialized technology topics:

* QuickTime
* PowerPC System Software, PowerPC Numerics
* Sound
* Networking
* AOCE
* QuickDraw GX

You should have a good grasp of the core topics, then pick and choose which specialized topics are for you among the current titles in the Inside Macintosh series.

Other technical books by Apple are published in the Apple Technical Library Series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for those who want to know about this opearaing system, Oct 30 1999

This review is from: Inside Macintosh (Paperback)
I was searching for a book which gives me all details about the operating system. Book which does not go too technically but something which could be understood by those who have some basic knowledge about how operating systems work and the like. More figures if added to the initial chapters could have added to the understanding. Overall, this is very good book whether you are a student who wants to learn about the operating system or a programmer who wants to write applications for it.
