Product Description

From Amazon.com

Strictly for kids, this 1999 live-action feature version of the popular cartoon series seems long even at 80 minutes. As a video, it's easier to take and appreciate for what works best in the story: the special effects. Matthew Broderick plays the security guard who is physically transformed into a multi-use cyborg with a zillion attachments, from stilts to helicopter blades to skis. A crimefighter in raincoat and fedora, and equipped with a nifty Gadgetmobile, the hero investigates the death of a man linked to the villainous Sanford Scolex (Rupert Everett). Scolex, who blames Gadget for having to wear a prosthetic hand, develops an evil robot twin of the good inspector, causing much mischief and giving Broderick an opportunity to poke fun at his own performance of the virtuous Inspector. The action is shaky, the script plods along, and the effects soon take over; Everett has to go to the extremes of hamminess just to be seen above it. But children of a certain age will almost certainly engage with the more clever stuff and forgive the rest. --Tom Keogh

1.0 out of 5 stars Go Go Gadget Commercial, Jan 2 2000
By
T. C. Reddy (Saint Joseph, IL United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Usually, the opening title sequence of a movie sets the tone of how good or bad will be the movie. This opening sequence seemed to last 10 minutes before it actually started the story. After watching this much of the show, I was quickly reminded of the movie "Spawn" which had an equally boring to watch opening sequence. "Spawn" had all the computer special effects in it, but the story was boring. Such is the case with Inspector Gadget, but this show decided to add "in your face" commercials (like Yahoo, Skittles, etc.) in practically every scene. I was highly annoyed watching this show.

The movie is not funny, is not true to the original Inspector Gadget cartoon, and is very boring to watch. The run time of the actual movie is only about 60 minutes excluding the opening and ending credits. Skip this disc.

4.0 out of 5 stars good family entertainment(veers away from the animated show), Aug 31 2007

This review is from: Inspector Gadget (Full Screen) (DVD)
this is a lite movie, with a bit of style and
not too much substance.but i thought they did a lot of good thing with
this movie.they veered off quite aways from the cartoon, which i think
works in this movie.Inspector Gadget is shown as less inept than in the
cartoon, and i thought Matthew Broderick portrayed the title character
very well.i also thought the movie was funny for both kids and
adults.Rupert Everett was a stroke of casting genius,in my opinion.he
steals the shows in many scenes.i thought he was the perfect "Claw".his
character is also very different from the animated show, but Everett
really convinced me of his badness.the character also had some
humour,another plus.the movie is rated "PG"but i think it's good
entertainment for the whole family. 4/5

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome movie!, July 1 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Inspector Gadget (Full Screen) (DVD)
This is a great movie-I at first watched it for Matthew Broderick, then I decided that it was a fun movie! Penny and Brain are also cool, played by Michelle Trachtenburg(Buffy and Harriet the Spy fame) and a cute little dog. The movie might be frightening to younger viewers, but overall its a great movie that the whole family will love! One other cool thing is that it takes place in Riverdale, Ohio(my home state) looks like it was even shot here but was really shot in pittsburgh
