Subtitles vs Closed Captioning,
By Ann W. Hutka (Kingston, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Inspector Lewis: The Complete Series 1-4 (DVD)
I bought the complete series because I loved the episodes I had seen on TV and wanted to view them all. The writing, production values, casting and acting are all first class. So is the inclusion of some regional British accents and language. The problem for me is that I need the subtitles/captioning to follow all the dialogue with the accents and language, and yes, to compensate for older hearing. The first two disks have conventional subtitles; wonderful viewing experience of the programs, total immersion. Surprise on the third disk: it switches to closed captioning "available on your remote control or TV". Except it doesn't work for me: not the remote subtitles, or the TV set captioning. Why should I have to deal with technical issues when I just want to watch these excellent programs? I would have liked to know about the switch from subtitles before I bought the series. My viewing of the series has crashed to a halt and I'm disappointed with PBS for making the change; what was wrong with continuing the subtitles, the same as all my other DVDs? I see this as a first class program (five stars) down-rated by a technical boondoggle (minus one star) in the production of the DVDs and I will think very carefully before I spend $100 on another PBS program.

I can just imagine how frustrating it is that amazon.ca or amazon.com is not able to tell you specifically as to what this set has included. After doing some EXTRA looking around (AND talking to the various sites online), from the sites that carry this product this is the final conclusion I have come to:(It says the following on PBS.org) -- This complete set of Inspector Lewis mysteries, inspired by the Inspector Morse novels of Colin Dexter includes... Disc 1 - Series Pilot, Whom the Gods Would Destroy (Stereo, Subtitles in English (SDH - 95 minutes long) Disc 2 - Old School Ties, Expiation (Stereo, Subtitles in English (SDH -- @85 minutes/each ) Disc 3 - And the Moonbeams Kiss the Sea, Music to Die For (Stereo, CC -- @86 minutes/each) Disc 4 - Life Born of Fire, The Great and the Good (Stereo, CC -- @86 minutes/each) Disc 5 - Allegory of Love, The Quality of Mercy (Stereo, CC -- @86 minutes/each) Disc 6 - The Point of Vanishing (Stereo), Counter Culture Blues (Stereo & 5.1) (Subtitles in English (SDH --@86 minutes/each) Disc 7 - The Dead of Winter, Dark Matter (Stereo & 5.1, Subtitles in English (SDH -- @86 minutes/each) Disc 8 - Your Sudden Death Question, Falling Darkness (Stereo & 5.1, Subtitles in English (SDH -- @86 minutes/each) Disc 9 - Old Unhappy Far Off Things, Wild Justice (Stereo & 5.1, Subtitles in English (SDH -- @90 minutes/each) Disc 10 - The Mind of Mountains, The Gift of Praise (Stereo & 5.1, Subtitles in English (SDH -- @90 minutes/each) From this information (from PBS.org)it seems that the new 'Series 4' that is showing on PBS for September, is what is on discs 9 and 10, as I understand it, AND that in the UK it is listed as 'Series 5' which was issued out in April of this year. (As you can see there are 10 DVD's in this package) and that to me would explain now as to why it's 1800 minutes long in total and NOT the approx 1425 minutes that amazon.co.uk says (for series 1-4). I did the adding up of the full time for each and I came to about 1762 minutes in total -- with 38 minutes left for extras. Here these movies would then be AT LEAST 86 minutes long on each movie. People must have really protested to PBS about this matter and so PBS felt that this was their way of compensating for their MAJOR mistake. Well, in spite of my frustration on trying to find the ACTUAL TRUTH, I am going to wait and see if it is ACTUALLY true about the adding of the last four movies. I hope this helps you make a much better decision on buying this product AND future products that PBS has aired.

Inspector Lewis - Intelligent crime drama,
This review is from: Inspector Lewis: The Complete Series 1-4 (DVD)
This outstanding British series never fails to deliver! The plots are intricate, well-written and always deliver a cheeky send-up of the stuffy intellectuals that inhabit Britain's most crime-ridden university: Oxford! As we go through the series the interrelationship between Inspector Lewis and Sergeant Hathaway continues to develop in complexity and one is always left wondering when poor old Inspector Lewis is going to fall for one of the many mature women who are sending him signals that he seems unable to read. Put a dead body in his path, though, and he is off like a terrier with his side-kick Hathaway, digging through the clues and ultimately finding the evil-doer. A fantastic series! We ordered from Amazon.ca and the CDs showed up two or three days later, which was great service.
