Besides the attractive cover and the Fortuny fabrics mentioned this book isn't really inspirational. Each photo is a residence in Dallas, Texas with the accompanying text reading as an advertisement for all the Dallas businesses that helped create the Americanized sterotypical "French and/or Italian" decor. Each photo may contain one authentic antique from the aforementioned countries but the rest of the decor and furniture is obviously American. The text is uninspired and uninformative. Not recommended if you're actually looking for French or Italian decor.

This book begins fairly well: both text and pictures make for an attractive and thoughtful volume. By the mid-portion, however, there seems to be an unfortunate tendency to illustrate rooms that are decidedly more American in design than French or Italian. By the end, I was disappointed to see interiors that lacked imagination, and appeared to have been added for reasons other than quality or focus. One bright note- the Fortuny patterns on the end-papers are wonderful.

I have all of her books and was looking forward to this one! Unfortunately it seems redundant and almost monotonous... I kept waiting to turn a page and be inspired, but that didn't happen!! It is, however a lovely and well photographed book which I'm sure will be appreciated by her many fans...

Clearly taking her cue from the ancien régime, Betty Lou Phillips fills pages with details fitting homes from New York to Paris and beyond. I have all of Ms. Phillips' books, and by far this is my favorite. I have it prominently displayed in my home. A must for all interested in European design.

This is the best book yet in a very interesting series. The illustrations, easy to understand and helpful captions and the historically interesting and practical text combine to make this a welcome guide and reference. Best of all, it describes the kind of home and furnishings most men should love. It is not foo-foo French. It is fun French, with a little Italian flavor thrown in for excitement. Every man should buy this book for his wife or equivalent in the hopes that some day he might enjoy living in such an enjoyable setting.
