Mayra Calvani - Armchair Interviews, Dec 2 2006
By Mayra Calvani "Multi-genre author and reviewer." - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Intent to Sell (Paperback)
In Intent to Sell, mystery author Jeffrey Marks offers other authors practical, ingenious advice on how to market the genre novel affordably and effectively.
The book covers all major topics of book marketing, from getting blurbs from famous authors and requesting pre-publication reviews, to writing successful press kits, organizing book tours and signings, standing out at conferences, working with publicists, to designing your own website, joining lists and online groups, creating your own newsletter and placing ads, among others.
At the end of the book there's an appendix with all the general resources an author should be familiar with, such as: review publications, newswire services, distribution networks, bookstore chains, airport bookstores, clubs and catalogues, lists servers, media directories, and organizations.
Besides being useful, Intent to Sell is also an enjoyable read. Marks' writing style is straight-forward and to the point, his prose engaging. While this book may be too simple for experienced marketers, it is the perfect reference for first-time authors who are new to book marketing, as it offers a clear, broad view of the business without getting into too much detail.

Market Your Work, Jan 2 2009
By Nash Black "Troubadour" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Intent to Sell (Paperback)
When Jeffrey Marks wrote INTENT TO SELL in 2005, many of his ideas were brand new. Since then others have flocked to print, the web, and blogs with the same ideas, but Jeff was a ground breaker for the new novelist who needed help with the promotion of their book.
There are hundreds of people out there willing to take your money to promote your books, but INTENT TO SELL provides sound practical advice for both the novice and expert on where the few dollars available should best be invested to obtain the greatest results. There are no "pie in the sky" best sellers without some very hard work on the part of the author.
INTENT TO SELL is worth both a first, and later, a second read for anyone who is serious about making writing a career.
Nash Black, author of WRITING AS A SMALL BUSINESS now available on Amazon Kindle.

Learning the publishing business, Jun 6 2007
By P. Herring "pegfish" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Intent to Sell (Paperback)
I just finished my second read of INTENT TO SELL. The first time through I was bowled over by the complete coverage of the subject, a little awed at the size of the task before me. Still, publication is looming and the book is very readable, so I read it again, this time taking notes on the specific advice provided. After twice through I'm starting to feel that it's possible, even for an amateur like me, to handle what is to come. From reading the book I know what I have to do, why it is necessary, and how it can be done well.
Jeffrey Marks did a great job of pulling together all the information a person needs to begin marketing a novel. Will I be able to do it effectively? Only time will tell, but if I don't, it won't be his fault. I got all the information I needed in his book, INTENT TO SELL.
