Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

The Intercontinentals are guitarist Frisell's latest band, a polyglot crew who bring their own musical vocabularies along for this intimate forum. They end up with a hybrid that frequently has its constituent parts shunted sideways. Some might compare the format to that already used by Ry Cooder, but it's a refreshing new direction for the Seattle-based Bill and a welcome respite from his rustic-Americana obsession of recent years.

Frisell is still probing the possibilities of folk forms, but on this occasion his feelers are spreading much further afield. His band features Brazilian guitarist Vinicius Cantuaria, who also shares percussive duties with the Malian Sidiki Camara. Christos Govetas, also living in Seattle but with a Greek-Macedonian parentage, plays oud and bouzouki. The remaining Americans are slide and pedal steel specialist Greg Leisz and violinist Jenny Scheinman.

This project was inspired by Frisell's recent live collaborations with Malian guitarists Boubacar Traore and Djelimady Tounkara, with his own stylings taking over their roles in the pan-global dialogue. All the tunes have a Frisellian stamp, with indistinct lines hovering between each contributor's input. Certain territories are sometimes allowed to dominate. There's the slow Malian blues of "Boubacar", the Brazilian pop of "Procissao" and "Perritos" (with Cantuaria crooning), then "The Young Monk" and "Yala", both featuring Govetas. Frisell often uses loops to bridge these tunes, turning the album into a linked experience as it makes its seductive progressions. --Martin Longley

Chronique amazon.fr

5.0 out of 5 stars From one intercontinental to another...., July 14 2004

Being both an intercontinental myself and a Bill Frisell lover, I was naturally pleased when this was released. But little did I know how absolutely magical it would be. Vinicious Cantuaria and Jenny Shineman make this album for me, they, like Frisell and everyone on this album, are the type of Artists the world needs more of. Intercontinental, unpredictable, modest, and beautiful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wake Up!, Jun 2 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Intercontinentals, the (Audio CD)
This album is, as my favorite cut is named, "Magic." Over sixty-five minutes of constant surprise: I get into the African groove and suddenly it's Greek; I sink into the Greek and a violin comes in and suddenly disappears; then there's an Appalachian twang, a Brazilian dance rhythm, and some sounds I didn't know existed till now, voices humming and wailing or incanting Portuguese or Senegalese, and everything blends, flows, and carries me somewhere I've never travelled. I sit down to listen to this with my earphones on and enter a new world. Absolutely mesmerizing. Haunting. Dreamlike. Beautiful beyond description. I'm going to move into this album and live in it till further notice.

4.0 out of 5 stars I'M JUST A P.C. WHITEGUY, Mar 27 2004

Hey- I just recently learned that since I'm white I have no taste in music- I like Frisell, I like world music, I like Jazz & I like blues, but I guess I'm lacking culture. I can't afford to hop a plane & fly off to Spain or South America to experience different peoples- sure wish I could- Until I can swing it, I'll have to sit at home with my music and books...
