Book Description

Oct 1 2012 Rachel Morgan

A true queen of urban fantasy—the New York Times bestselling author of the wildly popular series featuring bounty hunter witch-turned-daywalking demon Rachel Morgan—the phenomenal Kim Harrison explores the Hollows more deeply than ever before in Into the Woods, her first collection of short stories.

Rachel is here, as are Jenks the pixie, elven tycoon Trent Kalamack, and an unholy host of vampires, demons, shapeshifters, ghosts, and other assorted supernatural beings, friends and foes.

Into the Woods combines original work, including a new Hollows novella, as well as all of Kim Harrison’s previously published short fiction gathered together in one volume for the very first time. No true Hollows aficionado will want to pass this up—and readers of Laurell K. Hamilton, Kelley Armstrong, Patricia Briggs, and Jim Butcher; fans of Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight novels and of paranormal romance superstars Christine Feehan and Sherrilyn Kenyon, will be likewise enchanted.

Enter the woods . . . if you dare

Into the Woods

For centuries, the woods have been a pivotal part of the wonder and danger of fairy tales, for once you enter anything can happen. Elves, druids, fairies—who knows what you will find once you dare step into the forest?

And now, New York Times bestselling author Kim Harrison ventures into these mysterious, hidden lands of magic and mystery in her first short-story collection. Into the Woods brings together an enchanting mix of brand-new, never-before-published stories and tales from Harrison's beloved, bestselling Hollows series.

The tales here include an original Hollows novella, Million-Dollar Baby, about Trent Kalamack's secret elven quest in Pale Demon; two original short stories, "Pet Shop Boys" and "Temson Woods," that explore just what happens when humanity and the supernatural collide; and two novelettes, "Spider Silk" and "Grace," set in new worlds of imagination and adventure. Into the Woods also contains all of the previously published Hollows short stories—together in one volume for the very first time.

Step into the woods and discover the magic for yourself.

Disclaimer: I rarely enjoy short stories. Unable to wait for the next hollows novel I purchased Kim Harrison's short story anthology to tide me over. I was hoping to love it but most stories in the collection were only so-so. Surprisingly, I enjoyed the stories set in the Hollows the least (with the exception of the backstory of how Al tricks Ceri into becoming his familiar) as I found that they didn't really add to the main novels. Of the non-hollows worlds "Pet Shop Boys" was interesting and I quite enjoyed "Grace" in which all "magic" users must join the government or be stripped of their abilities. I would definitely pick up a full length story about Grace as I believe the character and premise of the world is deep enough to fill quite a few stories.

In Grace, Grace is a powerful government agent who is in charge of collecting those resisting joining or losing their powers. (In my view), she has essentially been brainwashed into thinking that the government is taking powered children for the better of everyone (I definitely see the potential for this to change). In this short story, we join her as she hunts down a particularly powerful youth and are gifted with a peak into her past.

This is the first book of hers that I can't seem to get through. There doesn't seem to be a direction to it.
