Product Description

A major upheaval in the history of teacher training will take place when, from the end of 1996, all primary teacher education will be school-based, entailing the setting up of hundreds of mentoring schemes around the country. Classroom teachers will become "mentors" to the student teachers in their school. This book focuses on the process and content of these schemes, containing the practical materials relevant to the three core subjects - English, Maths and Science.

This review is from: An Introduction to Primary Mentoring: Principles, Processes and Subject Knowledge (Paperback)
This 183 page handbook focuses on specific contributions that teachers can make to student teachers in a school-based learning situation . The information is drawn on the findings of three research projects based at the University of Wales-Swansea. The handbook is divided into two parts written by two groups of authors with the aim of enabling schools to form more successful partnerships with Higher Educational Institutions(HEI's) and to be more effective in structuring and supporting student teachers' school-site learning. The ten sections of the handbook cover basic guidelines for headteachers who are becoming involved in student teacher training, outline basic strategies and techniques that mentors can use in working with student teachers, outline a flexible mentor schedule, focus on student assessment and strategies for assessment, address key questions relating to the introduction and implementation of subject monitoring, offer six activities to provide an introduction to good teaching practice, include subject-specific activities for each core curriculum area, and provides extracts from piloting six of the aforementioned studies.
