Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

This bittersweet, lyrical novel describes a girl's first romance--and her struggle with leukemia. Ages 12-up.
Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal

Grade 9-12 Robin Gregory, a 17-year-old midwestern farm girl, is awaiting a battery of tests in the hospital when she meets personable Rick Winn, who is a striking contrast to the immature hometown boys she has known. Rick, who is undergoing chemotherapy, distracts Robin from her anxiety through his warmth and humor. When she learns that she too has leukemia, Rick provides constant support, helping her cope with her fear and anger and encouraging her when the treatments leave her moody, ugly, and debilitated. Love blossoms as they share their hopes and fears, and in a particularly touching moment, the two make love after leaving the hospital. Their optimism is short-lived, however, as Rick learns that his cancer has spread and can no longer be contained. Robin assumes the supporter role, helping Rick struggle with his rage at life's unfairness. Ferris skillfully avoids the hazard of mawkishness inherent in such a dual Love Story situation. The emotionally powerful ending affirms life with such intensity that it will leave readers appreciating the present moment more fully. Rick and Robin face adversity with courage, yet realistically fall prey to occasional despair. The book radiates love and caring between both the main characters and Robin's courageous family. Readers who sobbed over Doris Lund's Eric (Harper, 1974) won't finish Invincible Summer dry-eyed either. Merilyn S. Burrington, Vergennes Union High School, Vt.

4.0 out of 5 stars For All Seasons, Aug 6 2003
This review is from: Invincible Summer (Paperback)
Rick and Robin are soulmates, but the tragedy is that they are both fughting leukemia...this book's going to make some people cry so be sure the tissue box is full and close by.

I almost gave this amazing story 5 stars.Only Jean Ferris' talk of God made me lower it...for the reason that I'm not too sure she likes Him.

Robin's virginity issue couldn't have been handled more tastefully.

Invincible Summer follows Rick and Robin's relationship through each of the 4 seasons.

This is a beautiful and gripping story but expect it to end with a question mark.

5.0 out of 5 stars Invinvcible Summer, July 21 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Invincible Summer (Hardcover)
I highly recommend Invincible Summer. This book is very well written. It keeps your attention to the point were you cannot put the book down. Robin was speechless when the doctor told her she had leukemia. Dr. Schwartz said, "All indications are that Robin has acute lymphocytic leukemia." I believe girls from the age eleven and older would enjoy this book the most because it is a love story. For example, the book tells about how two people met in a difficult time and despite everything they fell in love. "I will always love you, I wish I can marry you right now," Robin tells Rick. If you like to read love stories, then this is the perfect book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the Read, Jun 18 2003
This review is from: Invincible Summer (Hardcover)
Invincible Summer by Jean Ferris is a fabulous book for teenagers. The words are not too complex and it is a quick read, but the plot is uplifting and precious. While reading this book I felt emotionally charged, I cried, I laughed, I fell in love, and I suffered.

This novel tells the story of a 17 year old girl diagnosed with Leukemia. When diagnosed, she is confronted with fears she had never known before. But as she struggles through chemo-therapy and the effects, she meets a boy, also with leukemia, who shares her pain. These two teenagers experience true love. They feel together and love together. And although they do have sex (I see a parent disagrees in an earlier review) the author does not include any details unapropriate for the age group and adds it in addition to the love they feel, not as proof of the love they feel. Now, that I've argued my point. I will encourage every reader to get this novel (from a library or amazon.) It is an easy and quick read, but it will touch you and teach you. It's DEFINITELY worth the read!
