3.0 out of 5 stars Iomega Iconnect Wireless Data Station, Sep 12 2011
This review is from: Iomega iConnect Wireless Data Station 34779 (Personal Computers)
PROS:
1. easy to connect external drives - I have 4 2TB external drives connected to 1 device
2. drives are shared and easily recognized by computers connected to the home network (windows XP, Vista and 7)
3. good cheap alternative when purchased for 60$

CONS:
1. drives don't spin down when not in use after 'x' minutes
2. share name needs to be reset when drives disconnected/reconnected - confusing
3. iconnect doesn't recognize the security set on the file thats on the device..instead, iconnect requires you to establish a username for the device and set security for the device/user (meaning security cannot differ on the same drive for the same user ... all files are treated the same)
4. there is no 'trash file' concept on the drive, and therefore when a file is deleted, it is gone immediately (and therefore proper security is a must !)
5. cannot connect a USB hub to the iconnect to support additional drives

XBOX: I have not yet determined how XBOX views the files

PRINTER SHARE: since my printers are network enabled, I have no need to share printers via iconnect and cannot comment on this feature

XBMC: XBMC is running on the home computers connected to the external drives shared by iconnect. The only XBMC 'issue' i've seen so far is that if read-only access is given to the drive for the user (best to prevent accidental deletion), then the user must FIRST go into windows explorer and 'select' the drive to view the files in order to get a pop-up (from iconnect) which prompts for user id/password entry. THEN you can enter XBMC to watch a movie (otherwise XBMC doesn't see the drives)

ADVICE: Go to the IOMEGA Support Forum for NAS devices and search for ICONNECT to see what other users are saying about this product. Many complain about the lack of a spin-down feature. Also many are waiting for a new firmware release to add some additional features / fix bugs...and it doesn't sound like Iomega is pursuing upgrades to firmware....so just be careful that the features you want are CURRENTLY supported... [...]

WOULD I BUY IT AGAIN ? Yes, currently its a decent cheap device. If I had more $$ to spend though, i would head straight to a real NAS solution with RAID capability.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review title., Jan 15 2012
This review is from: Iomega iConnect Wireless Data Station 34779 (Personal Computers)
Seller described product accurately. Opened box, plugged in & that's it. Plug & play. So far no negative product issues. Annoying that the additional software utilities are trial only. In my opinion, the additional software should be included with the drive.

4.0 out of 5 stars Working Well. Could be Improved, but Worth the Price., Feb 5 2011
This review is from: Iomega iConnect Wireless Data Station 34779 (Personal Computers)
I bought this product because I already had several external hard drives, and I didn't want to spend several hundred dollars on a home server. It is a very good wireless solution at a reasonable price.

Installation was very easy. It took several minutes to install the software, connect my external hard drives, and map the drives onto my computer. The instructions given are very simple and direct.

The on-line account page provides many options for optimization. You can name your drives, assign user permissions for each drive, along with many other options.

If you connect the iConnect to your router with an ethernet cable, you will experience significantly faster data transfer speeds than if you use the built in wireless option. With the iConnect connected to my router with an ethernet cable, I experienced speeds between 6-9 megabytes per second. If you connect the iConnect to your router wirelessly, you should expect speeds of about 1-2 megabytes per second (sometimes even slower).

You should know that if you disconnect a drive (I was doing this for larger transfers) and reconnect the drive, the drive will not be visible again until you run the Iomega iConnect software. It's not a big inconvenience; it only takes about an extra minute or so.

So far, everything is working well. I have 3 external hard drives connected, totaling 4 terabytes of data.
Usually the drives will appear in the "My Computer" section of windows explorer (in windows 7 at least). Sometimes it is not there, but you will definitely find it in the "Network" section.

Also, there is a feature for remote access. You could access your hard drives from any browser in the world, as long as you setup the remote access feature. You create a url address through Iomega (which they give you free for 1 year), and point any browser in the world to that address. I have not tried it yet.

The iConnect met my needs and expectations. I could not find another solution with as many features for a better price. I have been using it without any problems for about 5 weeks, and I can confidently recommend this as a good product.
