Review

Praise for Iris and Ruby: 'Thomas can write with ravishing sensuality.' KATE SAUNDERS, The Times 'Her evocation of the wartime [Cairo] has all the raffish, glittering brittleness of life on the edge! touches on the varieties and nuances of love betweeen men and women, and the power of family relationships to enhance and destroy lives.' ELIZABETH BUCHAN, Daily Mail 'Whether brilliantly conjuring the past -- the colour and life of wartime Cairo, the loves and the losses, the friendships made and severed -- portraying Lesley's stifled life or capturing Ruby's tangled emotions, Rosie Thomas creates unforgettable characters and settings. She's a superb writer.' Choice Magazine 'Rosie Thomas is both a subtle and realistic author and her portrait of Iris is never less than absorbing.' Elizabeth Buchan, Daily Mail --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Book Description

A richly textured story of love, loss and the distance between three generations of one family. The unexpected arrival of her wilful teenage granddaughter, Ruby, brings life and disorder to 82-year-old Iris Black's old house in Cairo. Ruby, driven by her fraught relationship with her own mother to run away from England, is seeking refuge with the grandmother she hasn't seen for years. An unlikely bond develops between them, as Ruby helps Iris to record her fading memories of the glittering, cosmopolitan Cairo of World War Two, and of her one true love -- the enigmatic Captain Xan Molyneaux -- whom she lost to the ravages of the conflict. This long-ago love has shaped Iris's life, and, as becomes increasingly apparent, those of her daughter and granddaughter. And it is to affect them all, again, in ways they could not have imagined.

5.0 out of 5 stars Emotionally engaging!, Sep 3 2009

I just finished reading this book last night and cannot stop thinking about it. I feel like I am Iris and Ruby myself and have gone through everything these characters have gone through. A really engaging read, but be prepared to cry!

Great book for summer reading. Especially for Moms. Along the lines of the Kite Runner.

3.0 out of 5 stars Iris and Ruby, Jan 19 2009
By Susan P. Blevins - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Iris and Ruby (Paperback)
Having spent two months in Cairo last year studying Arabic, I would say that this book gives a very authentic picture of life in that city. However, I found the story rather weak, and I was not drawn into the book as I would have liked. I recommend it to those who will be travelling to Egypt and are looking for some contemporary cultural background.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful piece of fiction, Sep 10 2011
By Robert S. Mellis - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Iris and Ruby (Paperback)
I found this book while we were wandering in Canada. What an outstanding piece of writing. You are transported to Cairo and dance between World War II and today. This is some of the best writing I have experienced about life in Egypt. Iris and Ruby
