Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Moving effortlessly from a merchant ship on the high seas to the glittering ballrooms of London, this exhilarating 19th-century romance is full of swashbuckling suspense and sexual sparks. Hugh Battancourt has all the makings of a true romantic hero he's chivalrous, strong, daring, mysterious and even considerate. He's also just made the biggest blunder of his espionage career: he has abducted 21-year-old Claire Banning Lynes, an unhappily married beauty, and accused her of spying for the French. Although his senses tell him he's got the wrong woman, it takes a lot of convincing and a little seduction on Claire's part to assure him of that truth. In the midst of sorting out Claire's identity and warding off a band of French merchants and soldiers, Hugh and Claire fall in love, but can a married lady and a world-weary spy find happiness together? Adultery is often frowned upon in romances, but Robards (To Trust a Stranger; Scandalous) addresses the topic without making either of her protagonists appear underhanded or unsympathetic. While the sexual chemistry between Hugh and Claire crackles and a handful of secondary characters including Hugh's crusty but caring henchman and Claire's bold little sister charm their way into readers' hearts, the plot winds a predictable path to a satisfying yet saccharine denouement.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good story line... but, Oct 7 2003

This review is from: Irresistible (Mass Market Paperback)
The setting is in England around 1813. Claire Lynes is mistaken for the female spy, Sophie Towbridge, and is hunted down by kidnappers but captured by Colonel Hugh Battancourt. Her only mistake was being at the wrong place at the wrong time. It takes a while to convince Hugh that she is Claire not Sophie. Sparks start up between Hugh and Claire when they travel by ship in close quarters. Claire is in an unhappy/loveless marriage with David but doesn't realize that until Hugh shows her what real love really is. So what about Sophie Towbridge, why are they out looking for her and how why is Hugh risking his life to capture Sophie? It Claire going to stay with David or will she leave him for Hugh? It's a love triangle. Read it and see what you think.

I do feel that this had a good story line but there were times there seemed to be no deepth- something missing. I, too, am one of those that finish a book every couple of days and just feel that there are better ones out there- though I won't say don't read this one. And KR fans may enjoy this one tremendously, but I again say that there are better ones out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic romance, April 3 2003

This review is from: Irresistible (Mass Market Paperback)
Karen Robards is one of the best writers of historical romance on the market. I am also an avid reader of romance novels and I look forward to the next book in this series. Scandalous was one of my all-time favorite books and this one would certainly place high on that list.

4.0 out of 5 stars Irresistible, Oct 15 2011
The book is in very good shape but it was to be received between September 21-30 and I didn't receive it until October 13th. I would still order this way again but I would add a few days on the ETA.
