Book Description

Feb. 28 2012
By appropriating and subverting Tintin creator Herge's classic "clear line" style, Joost Swarte revitalized European alternative comics in the 1970s with a series of satirical, musically elegant, supremely beautifully drawn short stories - often featuring his innocent, magnificently-quiffed Jopo de Pojo, or his orotund scientist character, Anton Makassar. Under Swarte's own exacting supervision, Is That All There Is? will collect virtually all of his alternative comics work from 1972 to date, including the Raw magazine stories that brought him fame among American comics aficionados in the 1980s. Especially great pains will be taken to match Swarte's superb coloring, which includes stories executed in watercolor, comics printed in retro duotones, fiendishly clever use of Zip-a-Tone screens, and much more. (There's even a story about how to color comics art using those screens, with Makassar as the teacher.) Other noteworthy stories include Swarte's take on an episode from Herge's early days, a Fats Domino story, a tribute to the legendary "Upside-Downs" strip, and a story titled simply "Modern Art."

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the wait. Feb. 27 2012
By Christoper Knight - Published on Amazon.com

I pre-ordered this ages ago, and was pleasantly surprised when it showed up on my porch this morning. The book is a bit smaller than I'd hoped, but the content more than makes up for it. Not necessarily comprehensive, it serves to showcase some of Swarte's best work, spanning the 70s to the 00s. If you're a fan of Swarte, Herge, or other claire ligne work, don't hesitate.

An amazing book filled with stunning artwork and intriguing story lines. I find myself continually picking this book up to read through again and to admire the immaculate and imaginative art.
An excellent production all round. I can't recommend this one highly enough.
5.0 out of 5 stars Master of clear line underground comics Jan. 1 2014
By Yakov Hadash - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Joost Swarte is a master of European underground comics. His works have appeared in various publications in America over the years, the vast majority of which are long out of print. Many of the works in this book have never appeared in English. Swarte spent years obsessing over the production of this book, making sure every line and color on every page are up to his high standards, and it shows: The art looks beautiful.

Content warning: This book is not for kids!
5.0 out of 5 stars King of the Ligne Claire Nov. 11 2013
By Chris Ward - Published on Amazon.com

Swarte is far more than an imitator of Herge's "clear line" school-- his incisive, biting, satiric, at times whimsical work transcends simplistic categorization. Reminiscent of Gluyas Williams and Seymour Chwast and (sometimes) Tomi Ungerer, Swarte is in a class by himself. This welcome collection puts together, at a surprisingly low price, dozens of his strips in monotone and color. Many feature Jopo de Pojo, his protagonist of choice. In a word, brilliant. Chris Ware's intro is a plus.

Highly recommended. Not for kiddies-- some adult material here
4.0 out of 5 stars Complete work of a short lived artist. April 20 2013

The cutting edge of the subject's work is in evidence in this volume. The artist's popularity comes as no surprise when you see all his issuances together in one place. Commentary is minimal.
