Book Description

Mar 13 2008 Museum of Fine Arts, Houston

Created by the renowned modernist artist and landscape architect Isamu Noguchi (1904–1988), the Cullen Sculpture Garden at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, has grown into one of the most important sculpture parks in America. For the past two decades the garden has offered a perfect setting to feature sculptures from the museum's outstanding collection and for masterworks on loan.

This handsome book maps the sense of discovery and rediscovery that the Cullen Sculpture Garden instills in every visitor. Two essays by leading experts on Noguchi and landscape architecture illuminate the history of the garden and its creator, and scholarly catalogue entries shed light on all twenty-three of the sculptures exhibited within this remarkable one-acre site.

5.0 out of 5 stars Noguchi's genius as the setting for world-class sculptors... Mar 27 2009
By Glenn Ralston - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is truly a remarkable volume in presenting the Noguchi genius as a superb setting for world-class sculptors. The greatest sculptors of modern times grab our attention in his natural, breathtaking settings as though captured in a moment personal only to our self alone.
I note again that Valerie J. Fletcher's description of his "United State's education" does nothing to dispel the dominant ignorance that he was like a foreign child attending a private boarding school. NOT SO. He grew up as a typical Hoosier teenager living with a local family in LaPorte, Indiana and graduated from its public High School. These little known years of the child becoming a young man shaped the spirit and the genius of this future world-famed artist. Noguchi's formidable Indiana experiences should be an explosive note in American Arts history. --Glenn Ralston
