Product Description

The Keeper of the Isis Light is the first book in Monica Hughes’ acclaimed trilogy, and it is the story of Olwen Pendennis, the Keeper of the Isis Light. She and her companion, Guardian, have lived alone on the remote planet Isis since the death of her parents. Now, colonists from an overcrowded and polluted Earth have landed and are settling in the valleys. Olwen fears these new inhabitants may ruin her world forever, and it seems she may
be right.

Years later, in Hughes’ sequel, The Guardian of Isis, the planet remains pristine and remote, even after the arrival of settlers from Earth. Over time, the settlers have abandoned the technological knowledge of their ancestors and replaced it with myth. But one young man seeks the truth, and he soon gets the chance to find it.

The final chapter in the Trilogy, The Isis Pedlar, brings the devious Michael Joseph Flynn and his daughter, Moira, to Isis. Michael’s magic firestone, his strangely delicious ambrosia, and his mysterious Forever Machine are beguiling to the humble members of the Isis community. Only Moira can expose this smooth-talking pedlar for the charlatan that he is. But will she be able to do it in time to save the simple agricultural community?

This review is from: The Isis Trilogy: Special Edition (Hardcover)
The late Monica Hughes classic tales about visual predjudice, the ease with which the powerful can corrupt and warp a society and how later such a society can be even further duped with ease. With the death of her parents Olwen Pendennis' Guardian adapts her so she can survive her life on the planet Isis. Fourteen years later she discover what those changes mean to her and the colonists newly arrived to her planet. Many years later in Guardian of Isis the settlers have renounced technology based on one mans twisted ideas. Yet one young man questions their life and sets out to find answers. In Isis Pedlar a con man and swindler arrives on the planet and exposes the society's many weaknesses.. The stories are as relevant today as they were when first written. It is surprising that no one has ever thought of turning these stories into a movie or movies. Of the three Isis Pedlar may be the least satisfying as one of the main antagonists has been very stereotypically displayed. And at the time Hughes wrote the story there was not the big hue and cry about cultural sensitivity as there is today. Yet these are very good stories and I recommend them for tweens to adults who would be intrigued by discovering the world of Isis.
