The Re-edition of the author's first romance,
By
This review is from: Island Flame (Mass Market Paperback)
First of all, this is a re-edition of the author's first romance. It isn't clear from the information on the back cover whether it has undergone any revision, but I would say it would have benefited from being rewritten in parts.Namely the book's first impression of the heroine (I shudder to call her that) is terrible. On the very first page, the narration informs us that Cathy is a selfish, headstrong brat of a young lady whose only redeeming grace is using charm and sexual attraction to manipulate the men by their little... nose. It is very weird for the narration not to even embrace a little the heroine's point of view. It is almost like the narration condescends on the character, and I thought right off the bat that this was very unattractive of the book. Worse, it sets the scene I think for the aggressiveness in the relationship later on; with the strange justification that if Cathy is a brat, it is normal in some sort of karmic way for the hero to treat her as a child and worse. It left me with the conclusion that this being novel for her, it is why Cathy is attracted to the only man to ever resist her and treat her like leftover dirt on his shoe. I get that it is annoying to be attracted to a girl as annoying as Cathy, but a grown man should be able to handle it better. The older reader will be reminded of all of those seventies romances where it seemed to be the height of romance for the hero to deflower the heroine in diverse degrees of violent outburst in diverse degrees of consent. Unfortunately what appealed then might not appeal now and in my case, it truly didn't appeal. Because the pirate and historical travel themes still hold some appeal, obviously enough to republish the book to bank on Robards' more massive appeal now that she writes the more mainstream contemporary mystery romance, the novel should have been rewritten sufficiently to update the romantic conflict. The romance genre often owes its faithful readership to the desire for escape. But the issues facing women now are much different than 20 years ago. I think the emphasis on the alpha male also should have been toned down a lot. Sadly, this re-edition didn't work out those problems. But then that's what this book left me with, it couldn't keep up with the times in just about every way: neither in the characters, emotional conflict nor recurring themes.

Lysette buried her face against Max's throat. "But he's going to take me away. Don't let him, don't -- ""You're not going anywhere," Max interrupted. "Calm yourself, Lysette. It's not good for you to become excited." His possessiveness made her strangely giddy. As far as he was concerned, she was his, and no one was going to take her away from him. Max stared at Etienne. His voice was soft, but it contained a note that chilled Lysette's blood. "If you so much as disarrange a hair on her head, I'll tear you apart." Lysette couldn't believe it, but she didn't care about her ruined reputation. The only thing that mattered was that she wouldn't have to marry Etienne.

Worst book I have ever read!!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Island Flame (Mass Market Paperback)
I have read a lot of books in my life, and this book was one of the worst! I can't believe people declare it as romantic!! The heroin is repeatedly and brutally raped throughout the whole book, and to make matters worse, she thinks she has asked for it and that it is actually enjoyable! This book is pretty twisted, and left me feeling just plain sick! I hope no young women read it and think this is ok! If you want good romance, don't read this!
