Harry Christophers and his crackerjack chorus and orchestra do Israel in Egypt like no one else: the plague choruses and closing songs of triumph crackle with energy; even the potentially turgid Lamentation of Part I is engrossing. Christophers's soloists are another matter: Caroline Trevor (sounding like a countertenor) does a fine job with the alto solos, and it's nice to hear the bass duet sung gracefully by Robert Evans and Simon Birchall rather than bellowed by two more operatic singers, but the others range from adequate to dreadful. Andrew Parrott on EMI has a much better group of soloists, but his performance of the choral numbers, while perfectly good, isn't nearly as exciting as Christophers's. --Matthew Westphal
