After seeing Measha on Canada's Got Talent, hearing of her tribulations, we felt that her Jazz excursion would be worth a purchase. Big mistake, I would doubt that anyone but a big fan of her opera talent would find this CD to their liking. Several reasonably good tracks in line with what would be expected for a jazz album intermingled with most tracks which were not good. The album is basically recorded live a a club in Atlantic Canada, bad acoustics, lack of good mixing seems to have been recorded 'as is". I would steer clear, could have, but didn't end up with a crush on Measha!

We looked forward to getting this CD as Measha has such a strong powerful voice and that engaging personality; however we were very disappointed in this one. It was recorded live and cetainly has that atmosphere, but was it recorded at rehearsal? Most tracks come across unfinished and some are downright noise! The best tracks on this CD are Misty and Both Sides Now. I question the wisdom in releasing this CD for sale and hope it does not hamper sales of future CDs from this lovely lady. A complete waste of money and one destined for our trash bin.

I've got a crush on Measha

Measha is a Canadian soprano who is in her mid-30s and just coming into her prime. I don't know if there is such a term as African-Canadian so I'll just say that she is a Negro with ancestral roots in the West Indies. She reminds me of Leontyne Price at the same age, in terms of her appearance and voice quality, and she has the chops to go with it. In my book, this is saying a lot.
"I've Got a Crush on You" (2012) is her latest audio CD. It consists of live performances recorded during a 2012 tour. Most of the repertoire consists of contemporary popular music, with emphasis on Canadian singer-songwriters. What amazes me about Measha is her ability to make her style fit the music. She rarely sounds like an opera singer slumming. As a result, I liked just about every performance on the disc. Also, the band is first-rate and the recording quality is state of the art.
I also bought an earlier CD that consisted of songs and arias by Berlioz and Massenet. She recorded it in her late 20s and her voice was not quite there yet, so I would recommend avoiding her earlier recordings. I hope that she will soon take on the Italian repertoire because I would love to see her do Aida.
