Product Description

From the Back Cover

This review is from: JEAN-FRANÇOIS MILLET : AU-DELÀ DE L'ANGÉLUS (Hardcover)
I wanted a book on Jean Francois Millet's work and I'm very, very happy with this book. I prefer books with mostly plates of paintings and drawings. All of the drawings and plates of paintings are in colour. There are many full page details of certain paintings and drawings. All of the reproductions are of excellent quailty with regards to clarity, brightness and colour. I don't believe the book shows the complete works of Millet, however all of his major works are in the book. There is a good mixture of pastels and drawings as well. Although I am not fluent in French I decided to take a chance on this book and I am not disappointed at all. I can read a bit of the text, and it seems quite detailed. There is a lot of text detailing his history throughout his career, from his family, to his training as an artist to the artists that he influenced after his death, including Gustave Courbet, Daumier, Jules Breton, Sobeslav Hippolyt Pinkas, Giovanni Segantini and several impressionists. The book includes some of the works of these artitsts at the end as well alongside Millet's works. Very well presented. I have over 85 art books in my collection and this book ranks in the top two or three for sure. Very, very pleased with my purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, May 3 2012

This review is from: JEAN-FRANÇOIS MILLET : AU-DELÀ DE L'ANGÉLUS (Hardcover)
I am very pleased with my book. I don't believe that it is a complete catalogue of all of Millet's paintings, however his major works are included. The picture quality is very clear, the colour is excellent and vivid and the pictures are not dark or blurred. There are many full page reproductions as well as full page details and full double page reproductions. The text is in French (which I am not fluent in) but that didn't matter since there are plenty of pictures, which is what I was interested in. At the end of the book, there are a few chapters on Millet's influence on other European artists with accompanying reproductions of their paintings (Courbet, Daumier, Breton, Pinkas, Degas, Pissaro, Segantini, etc.). The book is also laid out attractively and includes examples of his sketches, pastels, and pen and ink works in addition to his paintings. The text is very thorough and details his life at various stages. I definitely reccomend this excellent book.
