VIDEO:

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit arrives on blu-ray with MPEG-4 AVC 1080p 2.35:1 encode. This terrific transfer has a warm cinematic presence. Contrast is excellent with deep, solid blacks and revealing shadow delineation. The colour palette is richly hued with strong primaries and vibrant highlights that pop with brightness. Colour graduations are perfectly smooth and beautifully textured. Resolution is outstanding, with fine detail evident throughout. Detail is never lost, even in the darkest scenes. Facial features are finely resolved, as well as hair, clothing, and object texture. Fleshtones are perfectly hued, for impressive naturalness. This is a wonderful picture with stunning, reference imagery. (5/5)

AUDIO:

The DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1-channel soundtrack is effectively impressive, with a fully active immersive soundfield that envelops throughout, both in terms of low-level ambiance and energized peaks. The track is consistently dynamic, full, wide, and rich, delivering everything from robust musical notes to subtle ambiance with ease and lifelike accuracy. Music is very well spaced and plays with natural, enveloping stage presence. Clarity is strong throughout the range. Action sound effects are impeccably placed and detailed, whether the chaotic sounds of a helicopter before and after coming under fire, gunshots, or car crashes. Even more subtle sound effects, like brass casings falling to the floor after ejection from a suppressed pistol, play with an uncanny lifelike sound. Gently falling rain and rolling thunder, typical big city din, and airport public address announcements all play with a lifelike clarity and precision placement. Dialogue flows evenly and clearly from the center. This is a top-notch, reference-capable soundtrack from Paramount.

I recently watched Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. As a Kenneth Branagh production, I was expecting something pretty sophisticated. My quick take... Mr. Branagh (or Mr. Clancy) should have taken a few minutes to talk to somebody on Wall Street before finalizing the "Dr. Evil" story line. I say this as somebody who has been an active investor in precious metal mining companies for the past 15 years or so. The basic premise of the film is that the Russians are going to launch the US into a second Great Depression first by driving up the market price of the US Dollar, and then by selling off their US Dollar hoard, while also blowing up Wall Street. Let me point out a couple of holes in the plot. (1) The Russians are basically buying high and selling low. Usually, this is a way to lose YOUR OWN money, not somebody else’s. (2) The US Dollar was gaining “several cents a week.” Sorry, in the real world, several cents per YEAR is a big move in the currency markets. (3) I'm sure Goldman Sachs was happily selling dollars to the Russians at levels above long-term market trends. Wall Street is full of traders who would be game for that play. And you have to know that the shorts would be piling on in such a market dynamic as well, so the Russians would have had a large coterie of counterparties hanging on as the US Dollar topped. (4) When the Russians start selling off their dollars, the price will fall, as correctly described in the movie. However, it is the Russians themselves who are losing on the falling price. So they now plan to be out billions or trillions on this so-called act of financial self-sabotage. (5) Then they are going to blow up Wall Street. Read more ›

and kept on going. We thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I lent it to my sister and she and her family, including 22 year old son, also thought it a great ride.

The usual stellar packaging and speedy delivery from Amazon.

I still prefer Harrison Ford's, Jack Ryan. He just injects "how did I get into this, I'm not a field agent" into the role. Capt. Kirk is good, but a little too superman for the character. Probably the script more than the acting. Good movie...
