Building self esteem in kids through books

This is an adventurous tale that follows the life-cycle of a leaf named Jack from spring through fall.

Jack has hopes of becoming the perfect fall specimen, worthy of a collection, until the elements of nature shape him in unexpected ways. He learns to deal with the disappointment by patiently accepting the way he is, while still trying to be the best that he can be.

In the end, Jack is grateful as his final shape is revealed and he realizes that he is more special than he could ever have imagined.

Kathie Knerl was in awe of the gigantic size and vibrant color of the Maple leaves she found in Missouri. As she began searching for the perfect leaf to take to her little granddaughter, she soon realized that every leaf she picked up was blemished in some way. Having a vivid imagination, she began a story about a leaf to tell her granddaughter. So “Jack” was born.

The rest is his story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful new children's book, story and message. . . Jan. 30 2012
By annie bomgaars - Published on Amazon.com
This story is a heart-warming adventure of a leaf's life cycle, as seen through the eyes of a robin and Jack, the leaf. The storyline is whimsical and fun; the messages are endearing from the importance of helping others, being patient, self-acceptance and being grateful. The illustrations are beautiful and vibrant, capturing the attention of my 4 year old niece. With each picture, she had fun locating Jack and looking for his changes. Jack--the story of a leaf, is appropriate for any school or family, both religious and non-religious. This is the author's debut book and I hope there will be more!

5.0 out of 5 stars Jack has real meaning . . . Aug. 25 2011
By Karen Muldoon - Author of the Alphabet Family Adventures - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
This book will touch your heart in a sweet little way. The life cycle of Jack parallels that of a human and the inevitable stages of life which cannot be avoided, and can be savored as we grow older and wiser. Jack is also very beautifully illustrated and conveys meaning in deep rich colors.

5.0 out of 5 stars From leaf collecting to life lessons Aug. 31 2011
By Joan Brinkman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Jack - the story of a leaf; is a delightful read that shows how we can help each other out with our strengths, look at the world through different perspectives, and learn that what might not be the best of luck in one case - can be very lucky in another. The theme of "just be all that you are" is demonstrated in so many ways throughout this book. Even when things look like they are going to set Jack back, he keeps moving forward, and his own special kind of success emerges. As a grandma this story is a great "cuddle-up" read because Jack has so many adventures and questions to think and talk about. As a teacher, there are multiple teaching points in Jack from introducing the science of leaf collections, to affective discussions like counting on each other, patience, and staying positive. After reading about Jack, this little leaf stays in your mind long after finishing the last page. That is the mark of a good story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Story, Fun Illustrations Aug. 4 2013
By J. Robideau - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This story has more depth than most children's books that I have come across. I was glad to be able to sit down and read this to my son. On a kindle, it was a bit difficult holding his attention because of the fact that many times, the illustrations were not on the same screen/page as the text. He had to sit and listen only while I read, then look at the illustration after I moved to the next page. My son is only 3 years old. Older children may be a little more patient.

Overall, this book is highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jack, Story of a Leaf; an inspiring Elementary Guidance Tool Aug. 25 2011
By Cindy Morgan Anderson PreK-6 Guidance Counselor - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Jack, the Story of a Leaf; is a wonderfully written and illustrated book. Kathie Knerl's creativity in following Jack, the leaf through his life journey can help me teach valuable lessons in my elementary school guidance program about life changes, including lessons on death/dying (using the life cycle), self esteem, personal best, and accepting change. On a personal note it will also help me teach my young grandchildren about these lessons in a fun way.
