Roald Dahl's modern classic for children becomes a delightful combination of live action and stop-motion animation by the team that made The Nightmare Before Christmas: director Henry Selick and producers Tim Burton (Batman) and Denise Di Novi. The story concerns young James (played for real and through voice-overs by Paul Terry), who is orphaned and left in the charge of two cruel aunts (Miriam Margolyes, Joanna Lumley). Rescued by a mysterious fellow (Pete Postlethwaite), James ends up inside a giant peach, drifting over the Atlantic Ocean in the company of a gentleman grasshopper (voiced by Simon Callow), a fast-talking centipede (Richard Dreyfuss), an anxious earthworm (David Thewlis), a matronly ladybug (Jane Leeves), and a sexy spider (Susan Sarandon). The collection of actors and their creepy-crawly alter egos are a delight, especially when some of the song-and-dance numbers (tunes are written by Randy Newman) get everyone going. --Tom Keogh

Special Features

This Special Editon contains a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film, theatrical trailers, and a music video of Randy Newman's "Good News." The film is presented in the widescreen format for the first time on VHS.

Everything was great, fast delivery, the movie was in mint condition but I thought I was getting a slip cover for the blu ray like what`s shown in the picture. I didn`t and I was disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A modern classic. Nov. 2 2013
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
I loved this years ago when I first saw it.

I had to pick it up again and see it with the kiddies, they enjoyed the animation and the story.
Technically, I could not offer anything on that front... plenty of that on here though.
Sorry chums, enjoy! :D

4.0 out of 5 stars Tim Burton Classic May 21 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I just love this film. It was the first one I saw created by Tim Burton and I knew that it would not be the last! I found the story endearing, but I loved the characters the most.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still an amazingly fun movie! April 24 2013
Format:DVD
Road Dahl's stories always make great movies and this one is no exception! This movie is alive with adventure and ambience. The animation is still visually delicious in it's own stylistic way. Definitely withstands the test of time! This movie is a timeless classic full of great characters. Highly recommended!

Some good quotes:

"I did live between two pages of The National Geographic. Very informative magazine, the National Geographic. Lots of nice pictures." - Centipede

"I can't remember what fun is for." - James

"What are they?" - James
"Crocodile tongues." - Old Man
"Tongues?" - James
"Long, slimy crocodile tongues boiled in the skull of a dead witch for 40 days and 40 nights. And, the gizard of a pig, the fingers of a young monkey, the beak of a parrot and three spoonfuls of sugar, and then, let the moon do the rest." - Old Man

3.0 out of 5 stars This is not for young children May 27 2003
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
It is a charming movie, but I thought it was for kids and let my 5 year old watch it. Not a great idea. The movie begins with James living a wonderful life with terrific parents. His parents are then eaten by a fierce rhinocerous who appears out of storm clouds. Then he has to go and live with his cruel aunts who beat him (at one point they actually threaten him with an ax)and chase him across the world. The "happy" ending is that James gets to live the rest of his life with a bunch of giant insects, including a spider for a mother. If you are looking for a movie for young kids, skip this one.

2.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Children; Fails to Entertain Adults July 4 2004
Format:DVD
All children should see this, better yet -read it. The book was actually read to my class by our fifth grade teacher and our imaginations really soared.
The movie is a let down from the world I imagined. Also, this movie is not suitable for adults. It hardly held my attention, the songs are weak, and there is very little (if any) embedded adult humor.
Adult Burton enthusiasts should avoid this movie.
