the old ones are sometimes the best.,

This review is from: Jane Eyre (DVD)
I have often found that the older version of a movie turns out to be the best. For example: Jane Eyre with Orsen Welles and Joan Fontaine in the lead parts were excellent. The more recent versions were ok, but somehow the mood was not there. Both very good actors, I think Welles and Fontaine really took you back through the years to that time in England. that is why I bought this from Amazon, when I had the chance. Thank you for it.Gloria Grimson

Restrained Passion.,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Jane Eyre (DVD)
Victorians knew how to write stories that were drenched in restrained passion and this particular film version, among many many many done(it's a favourite of Hollywood's), is perhaps the best at portraying that theme. Because of the actors, to be sure, especially a younger Orson Welles who was still magnificent to look at, as well as to observe at his craft. But also because of the production values - music (the wonderful Bernard Herrman), sets, scenery, lighting, etc. and, of course, the excellent direction by Robert Stevenson, a man best known, actually, for his later, more colourful Disney efforts, such as Mary Poppins, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, etc. Not any indicator that he'd concoct such an excellent dish with this black and white fare!My only disappointment was with the length and, therefore, the amount of story not treated from the book. And that it was not done as a Criterion Bluray. Not a bad looking dvd, despite that.

Hauntingly Beautiful!,
By Raquelita "la rara" (Los Angeles, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Jane Eyre (VHS Tape)
This video was the first black and white movie I had ever seen (with the exception of Lon Chaney's "The Phantom of the Opera," and Mexican Cinema star Cantinflas from the 40's). After watching this movie I became a weird teenager who was all into black and white movies. This movie is missing some important stuff from Bronte's novel, but it is still a spectacular film with a plain but pretty Joan Fontaine and an intimidating tall dark and handsome Orson Welles. The whole plot makes the story perfect for the effects of black and white film. I've seen newer color versions and I must say that none of them come even close to this one. I have no idea why in the world this movie isn't out on DVD over here. I've even written to the people that make the Criterion Collection and have suggested to put this movie in with all their other good stuff. Still, I keep watching the video every two weeks. I can't get bored of this one.
