Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

Up until this point in her career Janet Jackson had been the good little girl of the family Jackson. 1993's Janet is where she gets all grown up and sexy--gone are the days of "Let's Wait a While", replaced instead by tracks chronicling the joys of being able to "boom boom boom until noon noon noon" ("Throb"). Janet contains something for everyone, from the huge-scale epic "Back" (with orchestral and operatic backing!) to poppier offerings such as "That's the Way Love Goes" and "Because of Love"; from the mushy ballads which she does so well ("Again") to the dance grooves which have you picturing synchronised dance routines in your head ("You Want This", "If"); and she even has a vague stab at folk on "What'll I Do". Janet co-wrote and produced the entire album with long-time collaborators Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and it features a handful of hits, as well as even more of the between-song interludes of which she has always been so fond. This was the album that made Janet a superstar, and on it, you can hear why. --Ronita Dutta

Amazon.com essential recording

Why is Janet Jackson's Janet the best Michael Jackson album since Thriller and the best Madonna album since..., well, since ever? Perhaps it's because Michael's kid sister is the only one of these three aerobic video stars with enough smarts to realize that sex, hooks, and beats are all that matter in this field of lightweight dance pop. Or perhaps it's because the sexuality Janet radiates through her sweet melodies and hip-tugging grooves is so much more credible than Michael's arrested prepubescence or Madonna's nothing-personal-just-business comeons. After her embarrassing posture as a sociocultural analyst on 1989's Rhythm Nation 1814, Janet has returned to her strength--using her odd mix of girlishness and maturity to make dance numbers about personal relationships ring exceptionally true. Even so, the 75-minute, 27-track Janet doesn't really work as an album; there's too much filler and the between-song transitions quickly grow tiresome. The album is full of killer singles, though, starting with such proven cuts as the extremely slinky "That's the Way Love Goes" and rock-guitar-driven "If," and featuring such future hits as the Prince-like "This Time," the Motown-like "Because of Love," the breathy ballad "Where Are You Now" and the inspired Stax cover, "What'll I Do. --Geoffrey Himes

5.0 out of 5 stars SO MUCH BETTER THAN I EXPECTED, Jan 5 2010
By
This review is from: Janet (Audio CD)
I love Janet! She is just brilliant, and her music is just so unique. People say that lately her music isn't that great, but I really like it. But for this album, for the most part I didn't really know what to expect because i only knew a couple of songs, such as If and Funky Big Band (both incredible songs). This whole CD was mind blowing and i love how all the interludes just flow with the rest of the songs. Here's a little review on each song:
1. Morning- Nice introduction to That's The Way Love Goes. It's her talking about how her and her lover had sex the night before, and its very peaceful.
2. That's The Way Love Goes- At first I didn't really like this song, but then one day i sat down, got comfortable, made sure there were no other distractions, and just listened. And I really did enjoy it. It has a very nice beat- 4/5.
3. You Know. . .- Interlude. Another interesting interlude.
4. You Want This- This song is a lot of fun to dance to! It really gets you moving and into a good mood. 4.5/5
5. Be A Good Boy- Interlude. Little introduction to the incredible If.
6. If- One of my favorite Janet songs ever! This song is electrifying and irresistible! Her voice sounds mysterious and powerful throughout! 5/5!
7. Back- Interlude. "I'm giving you Back!"
8. This Time- Another all time favorite! The music is haunting and effective, the lyrics are stunning, and the opera in the middle is just the icing on the cake. This song is perfect! 5/5
9. Go On Miss Janet- Interlude. "Go on girl!"
10. Throb- Janet. was her first album that has a lot to do with sex, and that really shows in this song! It's mesmerizing, and the few lyrics make it darkly mysterious! 4/5!
11. What'll I Do- One of the few songs on here that are just OK. Wasn't expecting this after something remarkable such as Throb. I mean, it is pretty good, just not one of the best. 3.5/5
12. The Lounge- Interlude. Strange- the sounds of people taking showers?
13. Funky Big Band- This song is very enjoyable! The beat is very danceable, and I keep on listening to it without wanting to stop! 4.5/5
14. Racism- Interlude. Janet makes a comment on racism.
15. New Agenda- Sounds like something from Rhythm Nation! What, with the theme of racism and african american women stepping up. The lyrics are great, and I usually don't like rap, but was interesting hearing what this guy had to say. 4/5.
16. Love Pt. 2- Interlude. A cool little remix of That's The Way Love Goes.
17. Because of Love- This song is nice. There is much rhythm, and the lyrics are very comforting. 4/5.
18. Wind- Interlude. The peaceful sound of wind to calm you down, or at least for 11 seconds!
19. Again- This is a nice ballad about falling in love again. It's peaceful, and her voice sounds really good in it, but I just have to be in the right mood to listen to it. 4/5
20. Another Lover- Interlude. Even though some people find them annoying, I'm loving these interludes!
21. Where Are You Now- Another peaceful ballad. The song is very R&B. But just like Again, I have to be in the right mood to listen to it. 3.5/5
22. Hold on Baby- Interlude.
23. The Body That Loves You- I love the beat and the melody in this song! It's another very sensual ballad that will make you smile. 4/5
24. Rain- Interlude. Who doesn't love the soothing sound of a storm?
25. Anytime, Anyplace- This song was pretty strange when I first heard it. It's very long, and maintains the same sort of beat throughout. One of the sexiest songs here, it's like That's The Way Love Goes, because you can just drift off into it. (I don't mean into sleep, but just for a peaceful rest in your mind). 4.5/5
26 Are You Still Up- Interlude. It's kind of long for an interlude, but what the heck? It's still really good.
27. Sweet Dreams/Whoops Now- This song has a good beat and it's a good way to finish the album. 4/5.

So you must see how much I love this album simply because it is wonderful music! You will not be disappointed!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Janet Jackson's Masterpiece, Nov 2 2004
By
Fred Mills (London, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Janet (Audio CD)
I am the worlds biggest Janet Jackson Fan and love all her albums but if asked which was best, without hesitation I would say this one. Unlike the expolsive openings of CONTROL and RHYTHM NATION this album calmly draws you in with 'Morning' before moving into the soulful 'Thats the way love goes'. A relaxing change from the raw funk and dance of 80's Janet. Heavy Dance tracks such as 'IF' and 'Because of love' add the dance edge, whilst ballads such as 'Again' and 'Anytime, anyplace' create a good mood balance.

Highlights include:
Thats the way love goes
If
This Time
Throb
Because of love
Again
Where are you now
The body that loves you
Anytime, anyplace
BUY IT, BUY IT NOW!!!

Also good: 'Janet.Remixed', 'Rhthym Nation','Velvet Rope', 'All For You', 'Damita Jo', 'Control'

5.0 out of 5 stars A Album To Go Down In History, July 4 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Janet (Audio CD)
This is by far one of my favorite albums of all time it has everything you could possibly ask for in a album. Janet is an artist who applies to everyone, And this album accomplished that with Sexy Sultry beats, to high paced dance sounds, to your beautiful ballads, and an awesome rock opera, even a little bit of country! Janet proves that she can make any type of sound work for her not to mention the awesome lyrics and arrangements
This is by far her best work.
