Book Description

Feb 20 2012 Jasper John Dooley (Book 1)
At last, it's Jasper John Dooley's turn to be Star of the Week at school. Unfortunately, nothing turns out as planned. His Show and Tell falls flat. A new baby at his friend Ori's house steals his spotlight. And worst of all, the new baby has only-child Jasper wondering if his own family is too small. When Jasper decides to build himself a brother (named Earl) out of wood, Earl's schoolyard shenanigans send Jasper to the principal's office! But with a little help from family and friends, things turn around for Jasper. And by the time Friday arrives, he is once again sure that he has what it takes to be a star. Jasper John Dooley: Star of the Week is the first in a series of chapter books featuring a charismatic and funny central character. An only child with active, loving parents (and a most impressive lint collection), Jasper John Dooley is a true original.

Review

"An early 'chapter book' that's a work of genius -- quirky, clever, wise, funny and altogether convincing. ... Adderson presents a rich, textured perspective on the world. ... Almost everything about this story is delightfully unexpected and rings true; it has a playful sparkle that makes it truly exceptional." --Toronto Star

"Characters are likable and quirky, and their exuberance is captured in intermittent pencil illustrations. This well-written, funny, and engaging story is a promising start to a new chapter book series, and early readers will anticipate Jasper and Ori's further adventures. Share with kids looking for a boy version of Sara Pennypacker's Clementine series or with fans of Lenore Look's Alvin Ho books." --Booklist

"Lots of believable dialogue enhances the brief, large-print presentation. Written for those who have just transitioned to chapter books, this series opener includes simple yet attractive black-and-white illustrations every few pages ... Jasper's day-to-day concerns are charming and funny. Readers will identify with many of Jasper's comical, age-appropriate issues as he navigates the sometimes confusing complications of early primary school. (Fiction. 5-8)" --Kirkus

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read Even for Pre-teens Aug 6 2012
By Succinct Reviews - Published on Amazon.com
This is a great read. The story is simply enough to be read by younger kids, but complex enough to entertain older kids. If you have children of varying ages this is a book that can be read, and understood, by all of them. It makes a nice family "book of the month" read for families that want to read something that kids of all ages will enjoy. My 11 year old son really enjoyed this book. He thought it was "interesting" and enjoyed the various "story twists." Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A series for younger elem. school kids -- and he's not a brat!! Nov 11 2012
By Jennifer Donovan - Published on Amazon.com
I was delighted by this little guy.

This is a traditional school story -- one that young children will easily understand and relate to. Jasper John is so excited that his turn to be Star of the Week is here. He thinks about it all weekend and even dreams about it the night before, which wakes him up extra early. He plans his special show and tell -- his lint collection -- but it falls flat. When it's time to make and present his family tree, he's afraid that it isn't enough. His family is so small, just him and his mom and dad. What if his family got a new baby like his friend Ori just did? Jasper John fudges his tree a little bit, which leads to an interesting presentation on experiment day: his baby brother made of wood.

Jasper John was sweet and lovable and real. He's a quirky individual who I think that young readers will identify with, whether they are new big brothers or sisters or only children. Every kid wants to be appreciated and liked by their teacher and classmates, and Jasper John shows kids that they can do that by being themselves. I'm not sure if kids this young are old enough to pick up on fiction that has an ulterior motive of teaching a lesson, but don't worry, author Caroline Adderson isn't being preachy. She lets Jasper John shine on his own.

It looks like this is book one in a series, and I'm glad to have a young boy who is weird and boyish (three words: belly button lint), and yet not a trouble-making slacker or brat.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun and age-appropriate read Nov 2 2012
By Mrs. Jennifer - Published on Amazon.com
Jasper John Dooley is really excited - he is Star of the Week at school! He gets to do all kinds of special things: share his family tree, have special show and tell, share a science experiment, perform a talent and bring a special snack. Will his week be just how he imagined it?

This is a great book for new chapter-book readers. It has a nice flow; the writing is easily understood but not written to pander to new readers. Many schools and grades use the "student of the week" or "student of the day" model and this book will likely appeal to readers in those classrooms, regardless of the exact grade level.

The situation is common enough: something special is finally happening and the child involved must match his or her expectations with reality. Rather than a birthday, holiday or vacation, this something special takes place at school. Jasper learns throughout the book that sometimes things do not work out the way you've envisioned. Other people's lives get in the way, things get forgotten, accidents (happy or not) happen.

In short, a recommended independent read for grades 2 and up here at my library and a family read-aloud for anyone of school age.
