Review

Jesse is a valuable addition not only to the Western fiction collection or the Kansas collection, but also to the heritage of the Kansas library community. Even if you dont read Westerns or have an interest in Jesse James, the seven-page Word of Explanation is a must-read... The remainder of Jesse lives up to the authors usual quality--a fast-paced, highly interesting and accurate fictional work with a twist... Recommended for Western fiction or Kansas collections, and for all Kansas libraries. -- Kansas Libraries Journal, September 1999

From the Publisher

Author Max McCoy delivers a compelling, dust-in-your throat novel that puts a surprising new spin on the legend of the Old West's most feared--and revered--gunman. -- Bantam Preview.

About the Author

Max McCoy is an award-winning investigative reporter, freelance journalist, and the award-winning author of four previous novels, including The Sixth Rider, Sons of Fire, The Wild Rider, and Home to Texas. He is also the author of Bantams Indiana Jones adventure series.

Civil War guerrilla. Notorious bank robber. Outlaw hero. Most of Jesse's life remains a mystery, obscured by the dubious 'facts' that have gathered upon his grave. But the curious manuscript at the core of this book--found recently in a southeast Kansas junk shop--claims to be his never-before-published autobiography, as told to the famous author of Huckleberry Finn. Consistent with historic record, it presents a compelling scenario for Jesse's survival--without disputing the DNA evidence recovered from the outlaw's grave in 1995. Vivid and engaging, Jesse brings to life the fictional meeting of America's most celebrated folk hero and its most beloved author--in their own words.

Not only has McCoy captured Twain's voice with consummate skill, his account of Jesse's life is a more compelling than the outlaw's manufactured legend. A brilliantly crafted look at two of our best-know icons. -- Fred Bean, author of Black Gold and Eden.~
