Product Description

Boxed set of three #1 bestselling mystery novels featuring private investigator, Jim Knighthorse, including:

When high school student Derrick Booker, the only black student at a posh Orange County high school, is accused of killing his white girlfriend, ex-college football hero and detective Jim Knighthorse is hired to dig a little deeper into the murder. It doesn't take long for Knighthorse to realize that not all is as it seems at tranquil Huntington High, from a band director who preys on the innocent to a vice-principal with a secret agenda of her own. Not to mention someone's hired a professional killer to keep Knighthorse permanently off the case. As the investigation continues, Knighthorse's personal life is shattered by the discovery of new evidence relating to his mother's unsolved murder, a murder dating back twenty years. Reeling from the discovery, a determined Jim Knighthorse sets out to bring two killers to justice.

Private investigator Jim Knighthorse takes on a very, very cold case. When historian Willie Clarke dies of mysteriously of dehydration in the California deserts, ex-football hero Jim Knighthorse is hired to dig a little deeper—and discovers a shocking connection to one of the West's oldest mysteries. Over a hundred years ago, an unnamed cowboy was murdered in the California desert and, due to freak weather conditions, would become mummified within twenty-four hours. Now known to the world as Sylvester the Mummy and displayed in a creepy curiosity shop, Sylvester and historian Willie Clarke will be forever linked in mystery. That is, unless private investigator Jim Knighthorse can survive long enough to untangle one of the West's greatest unsolved murders.

In this third book of the series, Private investigator Jim Knighthorse finds himself on the trail of his mother's killer, a cold case spanning two decades. While on the hunt, he takes on a brutal case that takes him into shark-infested waters and deep into the heart of Mexico. All the while, Knighthorse comes closer and closer to finding his mother's killer...and there's going to be hell to pay.

"I read Dark Horse by J.R. Rain. He's the author of Moon Dance, that I reviewed last column. The author is a private investigator, and it shows; this is another fast moving and entertaining detective story. Rain is surely destined for larger success, if he can get the right break; his fiction is fun reading."
—PIERS ANTHONY, bestselling author of Xanth

"I finished Dark Horse late last night. I enjoyed it immensely—very good story, J.R.! I really liked your dialogue, which kept me chuckling each time I sat down to read the book. Add great character and scene descriptions and a well-paced plot, and you've got a gripping story indeed. I can honestly say your book was as entertaining as anything I've ever read from Patricia Cornwell. I can easily see Dark Horse moving to the big screen!"
—AIDEN JAMES, bestselling author of Plague of Coins

"Dark Horse is one of the best books I've read in a long time! A great classic detective story with a modern twist. Unique and interesting characters (I think I'm half in love with Jim Knighthorse now!), a great plot that kept me guessing until the end, and some of the funniest lines I've read anywhere. Rain does an amazing job of blending suspense, mystery and humor in this fantastic debut novel destined for the keeper shelf."
—GEMMA HALLIDAY, bestselling author of Spying in High Heels

3.0 out of 5 stars Animal Cruelty Jan. 7 2013
By Amazon Customer - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I want to say up front that I love J R Rain's books. Can't read them fast enough. I had read the other Knighthorse books and really looked forward to reading Hail Mary. I gave this 3 stars because it is a well written book and the other stories are wonderful. HOWEVER, I really feel that there should have been some warning in the description about the horrific animal cruelty described in this book. I don't keep my head in the sand. I know there is cruelty in the world. When I read books I want to get away from it all for awhile. I would not have started this book if I had known what this was about and I don't think I can even finish it. Be careful before you start this if you love animals. This will keep you from sleeping good in the future.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hawk's View March 25 2012

Unknown author until I stumbled across the first Knighthorse book in an Amazon reviewer's comments. I tried the book and was very pleasantly surprised. The "hero" is a slightly flawed former athlete with some relevant family "problems". The stories are well plotted and always carry a message or two about the relations between people. There generally is also a not so delicate look at some of "man's inhumanity" to people and to the environment. I was pleased enough with the first book to then order the trilogy. I obtained and read the stories on my Kindle (plain one with the key board). I use the Kindle to explore new authors. If you like modern scenarios and the views of younger persons, please try the first book in the Knighthorse series - you might like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Series.... Reminds me of Spencer, or maybe Matt Helm. Feb. 27 2012

This is an excellent series. There is only one issue. I purchased the three books on the kindle for a trip I was taking in a couple weeks. I've already devoured the first two books, and now am trying to not read the third book until I start my trip :)

The main character reminds me a little of Spencer or Matt Helm. I like his attitude, and his work ethic. Great job to J.R. Rain. I've started looking at the other books you've written so thank you for putting fun books out to read where the characters may not do what's 100% legal, but they do what's right.

I have fallen for another J.R. Rain character. All the stories in this set are excellent, in my opinion. Once I started reading I couldn't put my Kindle down. I look forward to more from Jim Knighthorse.

4.0 out of 5 stars fun collection Feb. 23 2012
By Matthew Schiariti - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
I discovered JR Rain by reading Cursed! that he wrote with Scott I pulled the trigger on the Samantha Moon set and loved it...while waiting for the next installment I picked up this collection as well..I reviewed each of the three books as I finished them but I figured I'd review the series as a whole under the collection product.

Overall these are very fun stories, Hail Mary being the most serious of the three. Jim Knighthorse is a rogue with a good heart. Ex football star with a drinking problem and a short temper, but he's funny, charming and has a fierce sense of duty and loyalty to the ones he loves and his clients.

This series is more grounded, unless you consider he talks to a homeless man at a local McDonald's named Jack..who claims to be God..but other than that, no super powers, no avenging angels, no and characters from the Samantha Moon series are mentioned from time to time which is cool because it shows that all these characters live in the same world that JR Rain created for them.

The books are pretty short but usually have several story threads. The on going story thread through the first three books is Jim's quest to find out who murdered and raped his mother 20 years ago. It's what's most defined him for the past two decades and it's what makes him hit the bottle. Jim may look perfect on the outside but he's got plenty of baggage which makes for a character that's easier to relate to.

As you can expect from JR Rain much of the dialogue is laugh out loud funny, the writing is slick and engaging and the characters, both good and bad, are fun to read.

Great collection at a great price.
