This review is from: Jim Murray's Whisky Bible (Paperback)
Keeping with tradition, Jim Murray's Whisky Bible is essential for any Scotch enthusiast. Arranged in alphabetical order, many and close to most Scotch whiskys can be found. Often enough, Jim's brief reviews are both entertaining and informative.

Good Whisky makes him Garrulous,
By
This review is from: Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2011 (Paperback)
Firstly, I should say that I have bought The Whisky Bible every year now since the 3rd edition in 2006. Normally, I buy it directly from Jim Murray when he comes to the local whisky festival but I missed him this year. Jim tasted over 1,000 new whiskies for this 8th edition (2011) and it contains reviews of over 4,500 whiskies. When I taste whisky, I like to score it myself, then look it up in the "Bible" to see what Jim thought of it. I find his tastes are similar to mine and this gives me confidence in his scorings so I can look up a whisky I haven't tasted before buying it. Jim has an amazing vocabulary and an impressive ability to describe the aromas and tastes of the whisky he samples. For example: "a hickory-sweetened mixture of Fisherman's Friends and kippers" or "one of the most delicate noses I have come across this year landing with all the impact of a budgie's down feather during a good moult" or "furry, flat and out of sorts". When Jim tastes a superb whisky, he will go on at length to ensure you understand why he is so excited about this particular dram, e.g. "from the utter silky brilliance of the delivery to the multi-layered middle this simply oozes complexity, and on a level only a handful of distilleries in the world can even dream of reaching; a molecule or two of over enthusiastic oak takes this away from a full mark, but I am being harsh; the fruit and barley are in an embrace that only the purest of lovers would know..." If you enjoy whisky and you enjoy words, you will also enjoy reading this book. And, as Jim says, "You get 4500 tasting notes to carry around". The only downside to the book is the very small print, the compromise that had to be made to make the book portable. So I have to wear my reading glasses.
