Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

"Man, we don't fish or go bowling like other people do", Jimi Hendrix would say to bassist Billy Cox. "We make music, and this is fun". This remark explains how a man with three official studio albums could have produced so many compelling outtakes and oddities in a mere four years. To be sure, some of the alternative versions of the classic cuts across these four CDs are simply historical curiosities included to illustrate the development of a song. But the collection is also packed full of revelations.

Two 1966 live recordings from Paris--from the Experience's fourth performance--show just how early on the magic was evident, while two previously unreleased instrumentals from the Are You Experienced sessions of April 1967 show just how aware Hendrix, bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell were of their chemistry. Two songs from the landmark June Monterey Pop performance--including his unique take on Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone", round out disc one. Disc two finds Hendrix warming to the possibilities of the recording studio, especially once he took over for Chas Chandler at the production helm. Among the highlights are a deeply grooving demo of "Somewhere" from spring 1968, with some particularly supple guitar leads, and the haunting slow blues "It's Too Bad" spurred by jazz organist Larry Young and drummer Buddy Miles (eight months before the creation of the Band of Gypsies). Disc three begins with an updated and more dynamic 1969 version of "Stone Free", his first composition, but mostly displays Hendrix's guitar work at its most ferocious and freewheeling. Standouts include unreleased studio takes of "Hear My Train A-Comin'" and "Room Full of Mirrors" (the latter from Billy Cox's first session with Hendrix, heard here in take number 31), plus incredible concert forays into "Red House" and "Voodoo Chile" that were originally released on the posthumous (but powerful) Hendrix In The West. The final disc is in many ways the most interesting, as Hendrix's fusion of rock, jazz, blues and funk was becoming increasingly luminous. Whereas Hendrix used to use the studio to put finishing touches on mostly formed compositions, by 1970 he was using his free-form studio jams as a wellspring for material. Heard here for the first time, "Cherokee Mist" (with Cox and Mitchell behind him) is a mesmerising spontaneous creation and "Come Down Hard on Me" is a funky monster. Disc four also adds two more cuts from Hendrix In The West, including his spirited run through "Johnny B. Goode".

Thanks to his insatiable appetite for playing music, Hendrix crammed a career's worth of development into a few short years, moving from fiery psychedelic blues-rocker to soulful and brilliant musical synthesizer. Still, judging by the arc that's deftly traced across these discs, Hendrix's best music was still to come. At times, all this "extra" Hendrix material seems like a small consolation for all the music he did not get to make. But we'll take 'em. Thankfully, he didn't fish or bowl like other people do. --Marc Greilsamer

Product Description

The arc of Jimi Hendrix's cometlike career is captured on the four-disc Jimi Hendrix Experience box set, which showcases the musician's mercurial brilliance and offers new angles from which to appraise his artistry. That the great guitarist's unreleased musings have been explored since his death three decades ago wouldn't seem to bode well for a multidisc collection such as this. But this retrospective boggles the mind merely by presenting how much Hendrix accomplished in a few short years and, in doing so, questioning what he would have achieved had he lived. --Steven Stolder

Give Me a Break Jan 3 2001
Format:Audio CD
This box set is a mixed bag of live material, much of it re-released, and unreleased studio material. The studio material, while providing some insight into Hendrix' creative process, is primarily composed of unfinished demos of works-in-progress, and does not hold a candle to the finished studio works. All in all, this is among the least impressive material ever released in Hendrix' name. It still blows away most new music.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience {BOX SET} April 7 2004
Format:Audio CD
The Jimi Hendrix bookset contains four CD's of all unreleased tracks spanning from 1967 to 1970. This is truely the best box set that was ever released including an 80 page booklet with many rare photos of hendrix live, and in the studio. Highlights from the first disc contain Unreleased Recordings like Purple Haze, Foxy lady, Highway Chile, Burning Of The Midnight Lamp, and Like A Rolling Stone Live at The Monterey International Pop Festival, June 18, 1967. Highlights from the disc two include Bold As Love, Sweet Angel, Fire Live at Clark University, Gypsy Eyes, and Gloria. The third disc gets into latter recordings of Hendrix including Stone Free, Spanish Castle Magic, Little Wing, Voodoo Chile(slight return) Live at the Royal Albert Hall 1969, and Izabella.

Highlights from the fourth disc include Freedom, Johnny B. Goode Live at Berkeley 1970, Blue Suede Shoes Live at Berkley 1970, Hey Baby/In From The Storm live at Maui, 1970. Ezy Rider very cool version, Night Bird Flying, All Along The Watchtower live at The Isle Of Wight 1970, and In From The Storm. And the last track is the last song Hendrix recorded in the studio titled Slow Blues very rare. This box set is truely an experience I love to listen expesically to the live performences where hendrix just gives you an truely amazing performence. The studio versions are even funner to listen to this box set is worth the money buy this and be experienced. Highly Recomended!

I am a huge Hendrix fan.Full stop.I have no other words to describe it.I first purchassed this cd box set for only £15.00 in london!Thats really cheap for this box set because for most other places it would be about £50.00!I am a collector of Hendrix material, particually rare stuff.Ive got a really rare cd set of his, the track listing goes something like:THREE LITTLE BEARS,PEACE IN MISSIPPEE,JAZZ JIMI JAZZ,DRIVING SOUTH,GLORIA,TOO BAD,COUNTRY BLUES, TITLE#3, AND SLOW BLUES JAM, along other rare tracks. As you may hav realised, some of those tracks are off the experience box set.As i said earlier its good for collectors, but if your just a genaral jimi fan, i wouldnt.i fink youd probably find it too boring!Try buying something else eg.ELECTRIC LADYLAND,ARE YOU EXPERIENCED,BLUES,BAND OF GYPSIES,AXIS...,RISING SUN, SOUTH SATURN DELTA,RAINBOW BRIDGE CONCERTS, BLUE WILD ANGEL, LIVE AT BERKLEY,VOODOO SOUP,WOODSTOCK,LIVE AT FILLMORE,BBC SESSIONS, AXIS OUTAKES,AND GREATIST HITS.
