This review is from: John Brookes Garden Design (Hardcover)
A wonderful how-to book to understand garden design (as opposed to horticultural design.) It focusses on the spatial elements that make a good garden design rather than simply giving advice on plants (which it also does but to a lesser degree.) Brookes speaks the language of architects & landscape architects and as such provides a clear concepts and strategies to achieve your garden goals. It anchors these with before & after case studies that show the process of going from an existing landscape to a finished garden: from classical through modern, complete with sketches, photos and commentary/analysis.If the book has a weakness, it is the focus on very large gardens. But Brookes has remedied that with his 2006 book Small Garden.

This review is from: Well Designed Garden (Paperback)
Other than the somewhat annoying issue with typography (perhaps dozens of omitted spaces between words), an excellent book. Inspiring images, relevant history, notes and sketches on approaches from multiple styles in several case studies. Note that this title was previously published as "Garden Masterclass".
