Product Description

From Amazon.com

This is one of the three all-ballad albums that John Coltrane recorded in late 1962 and early 1963. Johnny Hartman was apparently Coltrane's suggestion, and his deep, dark voice meshes perfectly here with Coltrane's tenor. The material is well-chosen, including definitive readings of "My One and Only Love" and "Lush Life." McCoy Tyner fills out the chords, augmenting the harmonies and keeping the tone of these ballads respectful but not overly sentimental. All the players get to the deep structure of the songs and are not afraid to play in the most essential and elegant manner. This is beautiful jazz. --Michael Monhart

4.0 out of 5 stars Too smooth, July 10 2001
This review is from: John Coltrane And Johnny Hartm (Audio CD)
I loved this record, but the ammounts of schmaltz in there can clog your ears. It's just too smooth, arrangements bordering on corny. But the ladies seem to love it just fine, so who am I to complain?

4.0 out of 5 stars Uh, Dec 22 2000

This review is from: John Coltrane And Johnny Hartm (Audio CD)
Its strange to me that this set is very popular with people who aren't predisposed to most of Trane's impulse albums while hardcore Trane fans dismiss this as a strange blip on the screen. I find this album enjoyable but don't think Hartman and Trane make a GREAT pair. "My One and Only Love" is a standout but "Lush Life" doesn't quite work for me.

Not a first or second Trane purchase but a valuable set.

5.0 out of 5 stars A not well recognized singer..., Oct 25 2011
I discovered Johnny Hartman singing with Trane through listening to one of my TV music channels at MTS (Manitoba).
Great perfomances!!!. Something that expected from Trane but gratefully surprised when listening Johnny Hartman.
He had his own style indeed!. Like others, public and critics (business?)didn't put him in up the place that he deserved. A 100% enjoyable CD...one of the best investment you can do for yourself if you love music with highest quality, not simple nowadays noise.
