A Cartoon Network Hall of Fame animated show about an Elvis-inspired ladies' man with too much confidence and a decided lack of intellect, Van Partible's iconic Johnny Bravo is ridiculous, funny, clever, and totally irreverent all at the same time. Most self-respecting women are initially repelled by the cocky Johnny Bravo character--he's obsessed with flexing his muscles and he sees every situation as the perfect opportunity to pick up chicks. But after enduring a couple of episodes, the realization strikes that the chicks get their revenge on Johnny every time, and that it's actually kind of funny to watch. What also becomes clear is that the seemingly simplistic cartoon is really pretty clever. No, it's not a content-oriented show at all--it is definitely all about the laughs--but the creators are good at presenting the ridiculous and parodying iconic characters from the past. In fact, the funniest episodes are those that reference old movies or television shows: "The Man Who Cried Clown," "Johnny Real Good," and "Little Talky Tabitha" are quirky, out-of-this-realm stories that begin and end just like The Twilight Zone episodes, and "The Sensitive Male" is a hilarious spoof of those iconic Schoolhouse Rock television shorts. Similarly, "Johnny Meets Donny Osmond" is amusing not only because it pokes fun at the always-smiling, never-ruffled Donny Osmond, but also because of scenes that suggest The Sound of Music and Mary Poppins. "Johnny Bravo Meets Adam West" is absolutely ridiculous, but it works because it's such an obvious take-off on the old Batman cartoons. In addition to creator Partible, the series features the writing of Seth MacFarlane and Butch Hartman, each of whom later achieved his own fame with Family Guy and The Fairly Odd Parents, respectively. Bonuses include optional commentary on three episodes with Partible and an assortment of other talents, among them Jeff Bennett, John McIntyre, Butch Hartman, and Kara Vallow; the documentary "Bringing Up Johnny Bravo"; Seth MacFarlane's temporary song track for "The Sensitive Male"; and original pencil tests for two Johnny Bravo episodes. The bottom line is this: Johnny Bravo is a cartoon about a real jerk who gets into one ridiculous situation after another and who always gets what's coming to him--and even though part of you wants to hate it, you can't help but find it pretty darn funny. 5.0 out of 5 stars A true classic Nov 26 2011

This is a awesome show. I am so glad that they decided to release this on DVD. It does bring back good memories because I used to watch this as a child. A modern day version of Elvis! The best part is when he has to find the rhino hiding in the living room. Years ago I actually used some of Johnny's pick up lines but like in the show, they never did work. Very very hilarious!

5.0 out of 5 stars Yeah, Baby! Cartoon Network Classics Mar 17 2010

These past few years have been amazing for fans of animated television series from the eighties and nineties. To think that back at the start of this decade, when the millenium had just arrived, we were first introduced to DVD boxed sets and they were reserved mostly for top property shows like The Simpsons, South Park or Family Guy, or else new properties like 24. Now only as this decade comes to a close have animation fans started seeing some major releases as far as past animated series on DVD. Amazing shows such as GI Joe, Transformers, X-men: The Animated Series, and Daria (to be released this May) finally became available on DVD.

Now fans of the classic Cartoon Network shows, from back in the Toonami days, can own th complete first season fo Johnny Bravo, a show that was worked on by Family Guy's own Seth Macfarlane. The first season contains the following 13 episodes on 2-discs,

Disc 1
1. Super Duped:Bungled in the Jungle:Bearly Enough Time
2. The Sensitive Male: Bravo-Dooby-Doo
3. Date with an Antelope: Did You See a Bull Run by Here?: Cookie Crisis
4. I Used to Be Funny: My Fair Dork: 'Twas the Night
5. Blarney Buddies: Over the Hump: Johnny Bravo Meets Farrah Fawcett
6. Hip Hop Flop!: Talk to Me, Baby: Spaced Out Cat
7. Beach Blanket Bravo: The Day the Earth Didn't Move Around Anymore: The Aisle of Mixed Up Toys

Disc 2
8. Substitute Teacher: A Wolf in Chicks Clothing: Intensive Care
9. Jumbo Johnny: The Perfect Gift: Bravo, James Bravo
10. Going Batty: Berry the Butler: Red Faced in the White House
11. The Man Who Cried Clown: Johnny Real Good: Talky Tabitha
12. Johnny Bravo Meets Adam West: Johnny Bravo Meets Donny Osmond: Under the Big Flop
13. Johnny Bravo: Jungle Boy: Johnny Bravo and the Amazon Women

Special Features
-Bringing Up Bravo: Series documentary allowing viewers to explore the beginnings, middle, endings and everything in between that is Johnny Bravo.
-Audio Commentary by Van Partible, Jeff Bennett and Seth Macfarlane
-Johnny Bravo Original Pencil Tests: Introduction by Van Partible, some of the original pencil tests used in production process
-Seth Macfarlane Audio Track: Listen to Seth Macfarlane lay down an entire temp track on his own, well before he would become known for his Family Guy

Hopefully this release will sell well and lead to the release of further seasons and the release of other Cartoon Network properties in season sets or complete series set form. I grew up watching Deter's Laboratory and would love to own it on DVD. Johnny Bravo was a lesser favorite of mine in comparison so I give the series a 4/5 but certainly feel safe giving this set 5/5 on account of all the special features sure to please fans who are happy enough just to own the episodes in a proper set. Thanks for your time.

Johnny Bravo Season 1
13 Episodes on 2 Discs, being released June 15, 2010

"Johnny Bravo" is a show on the Cartoon Network about a dim-witted, girl-chasing, muscle-flexing, sunglasses-wearing, clown-hating, mama-loving pretty boy karate chopping his way through action packed antics. This is a "Hall of Fame" Cartoon Network set consisting of all thirteen episodes from the very first season and includes episodes of "Jungle Boy" and Johnny Bravo meeting all sorts of different characters including the Scooby Gang, Donny Osmond, Adam West, and Farrah Fawcett.

It is a pretty silly show without any real lessons to learn and just a lot of fun watching Johnny try to be a ladies' man and always getting beaten up by them eventually. A great find for fans of Hanna Barbara animation.

Bonus Features:

A featurette called "Bringing Up Johnny Bravo" covers Van Partible's creating of the character in college and Jeff Bennett voicing the character and the impact it made for the Cartoon Network. They talk about the animation style being a blend of several classic shows from Hanna Barbara and their goals for the mash-up of Johnny Bravo being Elvis with a bit of James Dean thrown in. There is commentary on three episodes by creator Van Partible and various other creators (like Seth MacFarlane) in which they mostly eventually talk about Seth MacFarlane, their former co-worker and his success creating "Family Guy" and how they all wish they had been able to do the same. They found a temp track by Seth MacFarlane to include testing out two songs for the episode "Sensitive Male!" and there are also Johnny Bravo Pencil Tests for two episodes showing the bare bones animation before color and sound effects were added.

Whoa, Momma ! It's finally here !

The first season of Johnny Bravo has finally flexed his way onto a terrific 2-disc DVD set ! Join your favorite muscle-brained, lady-lovin', Elvis-talkin' macho man as he scours the globe - or at least his hometown of Aron City - as he searches for the girl of his fantasies in the first 13 episodes of this swingin' series including:

"Super Duped" - Little Suzy takes Johnny to school as a Show-and-Tell project claiming that he's a superhero. Now Johnny must defeat a villain in order to impress Suzy's teacher.

"Bravo-Dooby-Doo" - In this cool crossover, Johnny enlists the help of the Scooby-Doo gang to help him find his missing aunt.

"Date with an Antelope" - Johnny's date that he met online turns out to be a talking antelope !

"Cookie Crisis" - Suzy continuously tries to tempt Johnny into buying her girl scout cookies in this whimsical rhyming adventure.

"I Used to Be Funny" - Learn why Johnny hates clowns as two of them go against each other.

"Talk to Me, Baby" - Johnny gets cast in a beautiful model's talk show.

"Beach Blanket Bravo" - It's nothing but a day at the beach for Johnny as he takes part in a surfing contest.

"The Perfect Gift" - Johnny desperately looks for a great Mother's Day gift for his mama, Bunny, by getting a job. Only thing is, he doesn't like working.

"Red Faced in the White House" - Johnny dates the President's daughter.

Other episodes include guest appearances by famous people like Farrah Fawcett, Adam West, and Donny Osmond (who later appeared in the Christmas and Valentine's Day specials). And with some great episodes on this set, there are some greater special features like commentaries on 3 key episodes with folks like Van Partible, the creator of Bravo and Jeff Bennett, the voice of Bravo; pencil tests for the two pilot episodes; a temp track for "The Sensitive Male" (the one where Johnny gets musically schooled on how to treat women better); and "Bringing Up Bravo" where Van, Jeff and few other people who worked on the first season look back on how this amazing series took off.

Even though the series has a few innuendos spouting from Bravo's mouth, he never seems to get the girl in the end. But he's still a good guy and his mama says so at that. As for me, I'll be enjoying this, until the rest of the series gets underway. But look for the next 2-disc set to premiere in the new "Cartoon Network Hall of Fame" series: "Courage the Cowardly Dog - Season 1" coming next month !
