Fabulous series - where's season two?,
By Inara (Vancouver, BC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Jonathan Creek: Season One (DVD)
The mysteries are sometimes very clever and sometimes not so much, but it doesn't matter. Jonathan and Madeline are the draw. The blurb describes Jonathan as shy. I'd say autistic or perhaps OCD. He's alternatively withdrawn and cocky, and it's not always easy to say which. He's always charming though, and his relationship with the larger than life (literally as well as in personality)and loud-mouthed but ultimately vulnerable Madeline is quirky and sometimes quite touching. There are two seasons of this out, but only in region 2. When do we get a region 1 version of season 2?

onathan Creek is a quiet, funny and clever mystery series. There are a few laugh out loud moments. The solutions to the mysteries and clever but not TOO clever that you can't figure them out on your own if you're paying attention and have an imagination. What I like the best is that Maddy (Quentin) isn't typical in the sense that she's not tall, long haired and leggy like most Amercian characters yet she and Jonathan still have a sexual chemistry as they flirt, sometimes unknowingly, with each other. That element of the show is very refreshing. I really hope that the following seasons are released on DVD in the future. I suppose there's every chance they will be since Season 1 just came out last october.

Edgar Allan Poe first invented the 'locked room' scenario in his story the Murders in the Rue Morgue in the 19th century. Since then many mystery fans have tried to solve this conundrum set by many authors but no one has made an entire series of locked room stories until David Renwick created Jonathan Creek, a genius with limited social skills whose day job is to invent tricks for a magian. His partner in solving these crimes is a journalist who continually draws on Jonathan's help to solve murders. The underlying tension -- will they or won't they -- become 'an item' is fun. And lets face it if Maddy doesn't seduce Jonathan it's never going to happen. I was thrilled to see this is season one as I used to sit glued to the TV every time one of the Jonathan Creek mysteries came along. I'm looking forward to the entire series. I'm a major mystery buff being a bit of a genius myself but these mysteries are tough to solve and that makes them even more entertaining as brain-teasers.
