Review

A great read! As a neighbor of mine, and countless other musicians in Laurel Canyon, Joni was always a formidable force on the music landscape. One of a kind. A true visionary whose genius is only eclipsed by her beauty. (Jimmy Greenspoon, Three Dog Night )

Joni Mitchell has never written a bad song. She was able to write things in her music that most of us could never articulate. As an artist she stands for something. There is a quality to her that gives us all hope. Fear causes conflict, and conflict causes wars. Joni's music fights that. It takes a special kind of courage to go out there and present their tunes. Joni is one of a kind and her story is fascinating. (Joe Butler, The Lovin' Spoonful )

Mark Bego is my favorite source for understanding the personality behind the music personalities that I enjoy listening too. (The very same artist that I play on the radio during my nationally syndicated morning show.) I am able to talk as an authority with more conviction thanks to Mark. Reading this biography about Joni Mitchell, brought me to the conclusion that she is a musical poet laureate. I was able to escape to a space in my mind that was totally comfortable. Joni Mitchell is the essence of peace, love and understanding. Reading this book brought the Woodstock experience back to life, and made me search for my tie dye. Mark Bego has authored another 'must read' for the music enthusiast. (Zach Martin, Q104.3 Radio, New York City )

When celebrities are making news, you know that Mark Bego's keen eye will be following. He's the biggest-selling biographer—10 million books worldwide—in the pop and rock & roll music worlds. Now he brings us the inspirational life of a true artist: Joni Mitchell. (Jed Ryan, PM Entertainment Magazine )

Mark Bego is the reigning king of the bio. From Cher to Whitney to Madonna to Michael Jackson, more than 40 celebrities have gotten the Bego treatment. (Chrissie Dickinson The Washington Post )

"Bego, who has penned biographies of musicians including Cher, Madonna and Bette Midler, focuses on the legendary '60s songstress in his latest effort, using new interviews, personal documents and more." (Julian Kesner New York Daily News )

"Bego...focuses on the legendary '60s songstress in his latest effort, using new interviews, personal documents, and more." (Julian Kesner New York Daily News, (Circ: 835, 121) )

1.0 out of 5 stars Unlike a Joni Mitchell song, this book lacks art, grace, poetry and beauty Feb 8 2008
By L. C Lipko - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
A poorly written, very boring book.

Joni Mitchell is such an incredible and interesting poet, writter, musician and yet this book lacks depth, wisdom and passion.

1.0 out of 5 stars Gossip & Innuendo July 24 2009
By Bloomsbury - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This "biography" is little more than a cut & paste compilation of gossipy news items about Mitchell.

There's little in depth about her incredible music (surely the reason she's worthy of a biography) & far too much tittle tattle about her love life. Mitchell tells us quite a bit about herself - elusively - in her songs. What is needed is a serious look at how she goes about the process of distilling the realities of her life into some of the 20th century's best music. The author has neither the insight or the musical & creative knowledge for this to happen.

Short of Mitchell herself writing her autobiography, you'd do better to read Sheila Weller's "Girls Like Us" which sets Mitchell firmly in a cultural & historical context & addresses the importance of her life & music to a generation of women.

1.0 out of 5 stars Stinkeroo! Nov 28 2008
By Michael Harris - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Complete waste of time and money. Mark Bego is clearly more interested in himself than he is in Ms. Mitchell. Adding this one to the list of worst books I've ever read (or, at least, tried to read).

P.S. Why aren't "no star" ratings allowed?
