5.0 out of 5 stars Clear and to the point Feb. 10 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is indeed a great book. Most importantly, its explanations of things are incredibly clear and to the point. It's also comprehensive, covering the basics from installation of Joomla and getting started with articles, right through to where to get extensions and templates. The book is written for Joomla 1.6.2, but I still found it usable for Joomla 3.0.3. It's amazing how quickly software moves on. I pity the authors of technical books, who have to revise their work every twelve months to keep it reasonably up to date.

5.0 out of 5 stars Joomla <explained> Dec 16 2011
Format:Paperback
Having attended Ostraining classes in Atlanta, I have a very high regard for the author Steve and his team. This book is written with examples from Joomla 1.6, which carry over to 1.7 and is very helpfull even to experienced users, as a reference to many things that have changed a bit from version to version. I recommend it for all, especially the new user.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb tutorial Aug. 9 2012
By Gary E. Albers - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Anyone who has ever attempted to design websites by handcoding with HTML, CSS and Javascript will greatly appreciate the value of using a CMS (Content Management System). Instead of spending many months, possibly years, gaining proficiency in those coding and markup languages, the task is reduced to (1) deciding which of the several CMS frameworks to use and (2) choosing a source of instruction. The first task usually amounts to deciding between one of the three most popular CMS implementations: WordPress, Joomla! or Drupal. For my purposes, I quickly decided on Joomla! for a variety of reasons. Then came the second task: how to learn to use it well in the shortest possible time.

After perusing the available texts on Amazon, I initially settled on Eric Tiggeler's book, Joomla! 2.5 Beginner's Guide, which appeared to be the most up-to-date and had good reviews. It covered Joomla! 2.5, the current version at the time, and I learned a lot from that book. Nevertheless, I finished it still pretty confused about the organization of Joomla! itself.

That was when I decided to buy the Kindle edition of _Joomla! Explained_, by Steven Burge, and I'm very glad I did. Burge's approach to teaching the fundamentals of Joomla primarily involves (1) using what he calls the CAShflow sequence of steps to add content and (2) repetition of core tasks. For me, it worked beautifully. I later learned that Burge runs a highly successful website that provides both online and classroom training in WordPress, Joomla! and Drupal, with an impressive list of satisfied clients. After finishing his tutorial book, I finally felt I had a good understanding of not only specific important tasks in Joomla!, but how everything fit together; i.e., the organization of Joomla! itself. This made it much easier to continue exploring on my own.

On one occasion I had to contact the author with a question. I received a personal reply within 24 hours. After answering my initial question during a couple of email exchanges, Steve turned me over to one of his excellent staff on his training website, OSTraining, who continued to provide knowledgeable help to several subsequent queries.

It should be noted that Burge's book targets version 1.6 of Joomla!, whereas the current version is 2.5, with 3.0 on the horizon. For the most part, this was not a problem. Almost all examples and instructions worked with 2.5, which I was using. The few inconsistencies I found were easy to identify and work around. The one major exception occurred in a later chapter on templates, where I was instructed to download and install a template that was apparently available free when Burge wrote the book. When I visited the download site, I discovered that the vendor now required registration and a substantial signup fee, which I declined! Again, this hiccup didn't seriously impact the lessons on templates. Also irritating was the fact that the book's errata referred to page numbers in the hardcopy version of the book. Since my Kindle edition did not have page numbers, only "locations", the errata were pretty useless. But, again, this did not represent a significant problem.

Having taught college-level computer science and programming courses in the past, I can only express my admiration for the organization and didactic techniques used by the author in this book. I would recommend it highly to anyone interested in learning the basics of Joomla! I look forward to an updated version of this book and, personally, intend to enroll in OSTraining for ongoing instruction from a tutorial school that seems to be both effective and surprisingly affordable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth it! Aug. 17 2011

I have been working with Joomla for just over a year and didn't know if this book would be helpful or not. Once I got the book and dived into it, I was extremely happy that I spent the money on the book and that I've invested my time in reading it. It is a great book for beginners, but it also has a lot of tips that someone who has been working with Joomla can take advantage of. The book is easy to read and the best part - it is easy to incorporate into your every day applications of Joomla.

The book is not only written by someone who really knows Joomla, but by someone who can teach others effectively. I bought the paper copy of the book as I am the type of person who likes making hand written notes and highlighting. But either the paper version or the Kindle version is a must have for every person who works with Joomla.

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME Joomla Guide! Aug. 17 2011
By Jacki B. - Published on Amazon.com

I've been tinkering with Joomla for about a year now and gone through several tutorials, etc., but still felt like I just didn't quite have a grasp of the "big picture". I got the Kindle version of this book, and it was SO helpful!! I just started from the very beginning and followed all the steps as they were given and it helped me SO much to better understand all about Joomla.

It was VERY simply explained - yet very thoroughly explained(!) - and I HIGHLY recommend this book even if you think you already know Joomla quite well! The book explains things that I haven't seen explained anywhere else!

If you want to design a website you have designed in your head or on paper with Joomla, then this is not the book for you. Neither is it the book for you if you have already used wordpress, drupal or if you are comfortable with static web design.

If you have never designed a website before and want to start out very slowly with Joomla and follow the steps to design the exact website the author guides you through, then I recommend you buy the book.

Overall the book is good, and simple to use. But is is not a reference book or a guide to designing your own site with Joomla. It is a painstakingly slow step by step guide to making a simple blog style website. If you want to change the images, banners, favicon, template etc, you will not find out how in this book. Burge also talks to you like you are a child. After showing the exact same process 3 times in a row he starts out with "are you feeling brave? can you do it on your own?". The repetition is excessive. If he explained how to do something like add an article, and then showed a couple options it would make sense. But instead he shows the steps to add an article, then shows it again, and again. All using his personal "CASh workflow" system. Speaking of which, if he took out all the excessive references to the "CASh workflow", he could save at least 10 or so pages. I got it the first time, I didn't need to read it by the 200th. There is only so many times anybody could hear "create, add, show" and not get sick of it. i put it to the Author that if we didn't get it by the 10th time, we are doomed to never get it.

It also bothered me that the paper copy of this book does not suggest you set up server on your computer. Other books I have, offered simple instructions to let you test the website on your computer, rather than having to use an online server.

I appreciated what I learned in the book, but compared to other web design reference books I have, it is not one I am glad I purchased. I won't refer to it again and I can't use it to look up things I need help with. I advise any potential buyers to first use the free version of the book online (joomlaexplained.com)and instead purchase a different Joomla book, such as Joomla templates or Joomla the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A short cut to learning Joomla! Nov. 14 2011
By Blue Square Web - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I purchased this book Saturday night and by Sunday morning I had covered already 25% of it, exercises included. I purchased the Kindle version and installed the Kindle software on my PC, which makes it very easy to click on the links that lead to the sample material (texts, images and sample sites) used in the exercises. Simultaneously I can work on the Joomla website that the book guides you to build.
Before finding this book I felt overwhelmed by the amount of information available on Joomla documentation. This book takes you step by step through the learning process. It is definitely a short cut to learning Joomla.
