Wow! This is a great historical novel. I dove in and hardly came up for air. What a life Rose (Josephine) had! When you read about the history, you often wonder why people did what they did. This book helps you understand the perspective of the time and the politics that set in motion so many well-known historical events. You get to see what they had to go through and it clarified so many things for me. I loved it!

I had been putting off reading this book because it's over 1,000 pages long...but I am so happy I finally did. It is a fantastic read with a great insight into an amazing women and the man she loved. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in historical fiction and the French Revolution. A wonderful read!

This book is wonderful if you like historical biographies. I didn't know much about Josephine Bonaparte before I read it. She was an intelligent and resourceful woman who lived in a troubled & turbulent country during a very historical era.

'The Josephine B. Trilogy' is as perfect as can be. Having read all three books, I can honestly count Sandra Gulland as one of my favourite authors from here on out. The story flows seamlessly from Josephine's childhood on Martinico; to her marriage to the womanizing Alexandre Beauharnais; through her imprisonment during the French Revolution and her rise to empress as the wife and 'guardian angel' to one of the most famous men in history.

I would definitely reccomend this trilogy to anyone who is searching for a story that proves that hope lights even the darkest of times, and love endures through everything.

Format: Paperback
These three books by historian Sandra Gulland are very readable.

They are written in the guise of diary entries, and span the entire life of Josephine from her childhood in the Dominican Republic up to (and past) her days as Empress of France.

There are tremendous insights into daily life in the late 18th and early 19th centuries both in France and her colonies. The insights into the character of Napoleon are fascinating. One small incident: on their wedding night Napoleon was badly bitten by Josephine's jealous dog, who was hiding under the marriage bed. His angry screams roused the household and everyone ended up in the bedroom. Anxious to get rid of them, Napoleon called for needle and thread and sewed up his own wound.

Despite being history books, these three wonderful volumes are absolute page turners.
